I'm thinking about replacing my office chair with one that looks like a race seat. I have seen them occasionally in catalogs, but was wondering whether anybody has any leads or even experience/pictures of one?

Paragon Motorcars has some cool custom racing seat office chairs. They can probably email you some pictures. The phone number is 303 706 1234.

tifosi - I've seen you bid early before & must ask, why bid so early in the game? All that does is attract attention and drive price up.

Oh guys, you're too much. You're right of course.

I do this to get going, get the email alert etc. . I know there is the watch list, but my heart isn't in it if I don't commit at least some cash. But once I set my initial price I sit back and either give up (as in the Lauda piece) or snipe if I really must have it.

BTW the reserve hasn't even been met by my highest bid (a new ebay feature to show that), so I'm not even sure anybody will get this chair at a reasonable price. I once bought a racing chair like this for around $ 200. The base for an office chair can't be that much, so the whole thing shouldn't be over 250 for a new one and this one is used. We'll see. Worst case I end up buillding one myself. It probably is cheaper to buy a used racing seat and a used office chair on ebay separately...

Oh and Wax: Shill bidders aside I believe things normally go for what they're worth. Regardless of me coming in early or not. At least that's what I've experienced with stuff I really, really want (e.g. Daytona parts).

Thanks man. Unfortunately some lousy shill bidder (zero feedback) raised the price to 190. You can get a new one for 220. Heck, you can get a racing seat and stand for about 100. Ridiculous. I hate to see good auctions fall apart because of greedy people. Wouldn't be surprised if the seller contacts me afterwards and tells me the buyer didn't come through. Jerks.

That sucks. What a big... fat... Zer0.

The bidding ends in 1 hour, 37 minutes. Wonder how long it'll take for wonderboy to contact you with sob story.

Well I guess I just learned a lesson. Sounds like you guys were right after all not to show interest too early. All I caused was the seller to mobilize his shill bidder to outbid me.

Well too bad. I'm not gonna bid anymore. The chair was a steal at 50, a good deal at 100 and tolerable at 150. At 190+ it has become a joke. The best part is, that the reserve hasn't even been met. What do these people think they're used chair is worth?

Here is a new one for 18 bucks more:

If I were me, I wouldn't pat myself on the back just yet. Wait - I am me. *Pats self on head* -

*offers self biscuit, barks, sits, stays, receives, devours said biscuit, runs around room, leaves skid marks here, there and everywhere.*

Apparently, it's as difficult to predict seller behavior as it is my own. Anyhoo, enough tomfoolery. Help Andreas out, folks - there's gotta be a pay-it-forward opportunity in the form of a seat just begging to be put to good use.

Thanks, but no worries. In my search I learned that Corbeau actually makes a stand for racing seats to turn them into office chairs. Costs about 70 bucks. Ebay is full with racing seats for under 100. So I think this can be resolved fairly quickly for not too much money. But in case somebody has a racing seat to get rid of, I'm game.

On a side note: I noticed how often racing seats are sold as pairs, which is really odd: If you're that serious about it, don't you just leave the second seat off altogether? Guess not if you're from the 2 fast 2 furious crowd.

    Hello guys,

I just want to comment on this post, yes I do sell office chairs, but the purpose of this reply is to give out some info.

Ever wonder why companies like Corbeau have to turn their seats into office chairs, it is because they can not sell them as car seats.

There is only one company out there that sells an office chair that is worth buying, it is the recaro office chair, Recaro is the largest seat manufacturer in the world, did they started with a car seat, no they designed a special seat for that purpose.
    Is it expensive????
You bet, they start at $950. But think about it, they last for more then 10 years, and where designed for 911 dispatch crews that sit for 8-10hrs straight.
So is your back worth it?
    here is a picture
If you would like more info please do not hesitate to contact me
    thanks

I built a ProRally car from a 1972 Volvo 142 and installed lightweight racing buckets. I took the stock seats, VERY comfortable buckets with recline and adjustable lumbar features, and made office chairs from them. I went to a used office supply store, bought two tired swivel chairs, threw away the chair parts, painted the perfectly good bases, and installed the 142 seats on simple adapter crossbars. I am sitting in one now, 33 years later, and it is just as functional as when I built them. There are a LOT of very good automotive seats out there in junk yards, it just takes a small amount of effort to set one up for your office.

I suggest just building one. Find a salvage yard online with car seats you like (Ferrari, Porsche, etc) and just bolt it up to the bottom part of a regular chair. I've seen this done a few times and the seats still had side airbags, pretty neat!

For those that built their own chairs, what did you do about arm rests?? I don't think I could use an office chair without them, I need them for thinking!

In general I feel the same way. However I think the armrests distort the looks of the racing seat. And to be honest, I wouldn't use this seat for mere desk work, but as part of a desk based racing simulator. So my hands would always be on the wheel/stick.
    :)
