My original dash is in pretty good shape, but the glare does get annoying. I've seen lots of stupid looking carpeted dash mats, but I got to thinking, how bad would a suede or alcantara version look? Nothing permanent, but maybe sewn and fitted to over lay? Maybe held on with some double sided tape or whatever the carpet covers are held on with?

Any chance of this working? Who is making the temporary targa tops for us? Maybe he has the skills to do something like this?

I looked at a black '79 in Atlanta a few years ago that had its dash redone in black alcantara. Very nice and there was no glare at all. I liked the look, but in the end the car wasn't for me.

Make yourself a paper pattern of just the intrument pod cover, and then go to the fabric store and get some black microfiber (like alcantera/suede finish) and cut it out to the pattern with an extra half in around each edge for seaming. Cut some clothes-hanger wires to the lengths of the two sides and insert them in the side seams before you close them. These will weigh the sides down as well as help it keep its shape, AND you can roll it up if/when you're not using it. I've got one like this that I made, and it works just fine... never blows out of position when driving.

Of course, good polarized sunglasses get rid of the pod glare on the windshield -- no work or modification involved!

Oh, and the folks who make Dashmat (www.dashmat.com) *also* do have the same thing in a microfiber-suede now -- $50, so it's just $10 more than their regular carpet or velour material Dashmats... it's called their "signature series".

Sold out now in black! Probably because of here. If an Fchatter ordered one I would like to see a picture when installed, thanks!

    Hmmm,

While upgrading the bulbs in my gauges and changing out my gauge panel from a stock unit to carbon fiberone, I decide to do the alcantera upgrade on the instrument pod cover. I absolutely love it... no more glare right in front of me! Had it done with the proper stitching, if you don't really know these cars you'd think it was stock.

I'll post a pic as soon as I get time to take one..

Sorry might be the friday night wine bottle but (LOL) swear to god it's true. My car smell like a stable for two days every spring. OK now everybody can laugh but you've been warned.
    Good night everybody!

Go look in the Boxer/TR section. William H had an alcantara interior done on his "slutmobile" TR choptop. A boxer was also done with alcantara dash and many carbon fiber bits only finished a few months ago.
