I was stuck in freeway traffic on a slightly uphill grade which extended for 2 miles. I inched along for 10 -15 minutes, mostly in 2nd gear on my F1 360. The traffic actually never came to a complete stop to allow me to put it into Neutral.

The audible clutch overheating alert sounded. Luckily the traffic cleared just after the alarm started.

How long can you keep going after the alarm sounds?

What would you do if the traffic continued to be slow and the alarm kept beeping?

Would it have helped to push the traction control button on the center console to keep it in 2nd gear?

Some Fcar drivers must get stuck in uphill traffic everyday, what do they do other than take another route or work flexible hours?

Even in slow traffic uphill I can not slip the clutch but fully engage it. Allow lots of space in front, select a lower gear, move only when you have room, and progress slowly so as not to eat up the room unless you have to.

I actually do most of these things in my Toyota minivan when in traffic. Who wants to break to a stop and accelerate to five miles per hour only to break to a stop. I try to smooth out the stop and go by allowing room and not eating it up. Actually I find that most other drivers give extra allowence for front room to the F-Car - sometimes I stop my spider in the shade feet before the next car and no one acts like I should move up on the bumper of the car in front. Contra the minivan - some people beep if I allow an inch between the car before me.

Doug, get it fixed ASAP. Don't continue to drive the car with those symptoms.

Yeah, slip the clutch and get a warning light.

This is what will burn your clutch out real fast so of course it's best to avoid stuff like that. As long as the gear is engaged then it's not too bad. Driving around after should help cool things off. Of course living in San Fran doesn't help.

This is why the F1 is good on the track and the 6 speed manual is good for real life :)

In traffic, with a 6 speed manual, even at a very slow crawl, you can leave it in 1st or 2nd and keep the clutch completely out. I usually do 1st and just stay off the gas completely. As long as you leave a little distance in front of you and the car ahead of you, you can pretty much just crawl along and stay off the clutch/brake.
