Today a car cam in with a tire puncture. It looked like it had a large, 5/8" diameter concrete lug stuck in it. When I pulled the tire off the car and went to pull it out I noticed the thing reeked of pot - the kind folks smoke. The thing cam apart while pulling it out and appears to be part of a dope pipe and has left a 1/2" hole in the tire. Anyway I have seen all kinds of nails, screws, staples, tacks, glass etc. put holes in tires but this is hands down the strangest find for me.

Thought it would be interesting to see what other oddities everyone else has found to cause flats for them.

I had a 1981 Mercedes Benz 300D Sedan. A headlight went out, so I bought one at the auto parts and put it in.

The next morning, as I drove away, a sudden bang, followed by a long screech from the left front tire -- the phillips head screwdriver that I had used had bounced off the front bumper, and perfectly speared through the middle of my tire. It actually stopped the wheel from rolling due to the handle.

But I cannot match the bong.

Once had a 1/2" diameter bolt that was 5" long. How it made it's way into the tire I don't know, you'd think anything that large would have to be laying down and not sticking up.

Same thing happened to me with a 1/2" drill bit. I asked a Goodyear tire rep how that was possible. He said "It was a rear tire, wasn't it?". It was. He said it is common for the front tire to kick it up and hit the rear tire just wrong. OK, so was yours the rear tire? -Steve p.s. I still use the drill bit.

My wife once had the "S" hook from the end of one of those trucker type bungies puncture through the tread and then out the sidewall.

I know this will be off topic a bit but here goes.. I have a friend that veered off the road just enough to catch a metal post(one of those green fence posts) that held a reflector on the top of it, anyway it acted like a spear and went into the tire and then thru the top of the fender it was the damnest thing I have ever seen.

I had a rock go through a cheap tire that Ford puts on their pick ups. I had pulled off to the side of a gravel road for a moment. When I started up and left I was only doing about 10 MPH and the tire was flat. I was up set. It was cold and raining to boot. Now I have a set of ten ply tires on the Ford.

1994 F250 coming up the alcan on the OEM tires - - - EXACT same thing. I was astonished that gravel (not sharp - just a regular old piece of rounded off rock) would punture an 80psi tire!

In the late 60's and early 70's, I owned a few Firestone stores. The weirdest was a human tooth that puntured a tyre; I always wondered about that one! Another was a flat caused by a Bic Pen, and the pen still wrote!

Also, slightly off topic, but funny. A friend of mine about 30 years ago hit a deer, just sort of busted up the front grille and headlight, no big deal. A month later, the battery went dead. When I removed it, I found an antler sticking into the bottom of the battery, and had drained all the acid out of one cell. I removed the antler, put some black RTV in the hole, and filled the cell with water. Took it back to Sears, and got it warranteed :). -Steve

Friend of mine had a spark plug through a tire. He saved it like a charm and had it hanging from his rear view mirror in college.

I once had the broken end of a Craftsman box end wrench go through my tire...I was going to take it to Sears and see if they would give me a free replacement...but didn't have the nuts to do it. ;) I carried that wrench in my glove box for 3 years, thinking I would drop in and exchange it...but never got around to it.

I also once had the hook end of one of those giant nylon straps used on semi-trailers go through the side wall of a tire...instant blow out!

I once had a part of a metal fork stuck in my rear tire. Lucky for me, I caught it before it punctured the tire. Never did figure out, where it came from.

I found what looked like a piece of a bullet, maybe from a .22.......driving along in rual upstate NY.

We had somebody shoot the house too, thorough the wall, broke a picture hanging there and stuck in a beam in the ceiling. The police said there were several similar reports, appearently someone was driving around shooting houses. Again rual upstate NY.

Long ago I worked at a Goodyear store as a tireman, we saw all kinds of things that caused flats.

The strangest one that comes to mind is a pair of tire weight pliers that some tireman left inside the tire and was poking through the sidewall. Bet he wonders where he left those!

Occasionally some one would bring in a flat tire, I'd open the tire up and find someone had plugged a tire with a tube in it....or they would bring in a tire they had repaired with FIX A FLAT......what a mess in side.
