Can you guys help me figure out what is going on with my car. I have a 1988 328. I was accelerating hard in first and when I went to shift (car in neutral), the engine revved uncontrollably. The needle almost hit redline right before I shut off the car. I coasted a short while and turned the car back on, immediately the car revved as if I had the accelerator pedal floored. I shut it off again and slammed my foot to the accelerator pedal two or three times. Turned the car back on and it was fine. I am nervous to drive the car again. I had less than a second to turn the car off before the motor revved past redline. What do you think it is, Thanks.

if the cable gets stuck, the pedal will stay all the way at the bottom, maybe is the TB assembly!

The same thing has happened to me recently with my 1977 308 GTB carb car!

I can't re-create it but it's happened twice in the past few months. Right after I start it engine goes to redline! Loud and frightening--and possibly damaging...

Fraked me out bad. Seemed to sustain no damage, as the car has worked fine since..

NO, it's NOT my carpet mat!! I'ts pulled back and Velcroed massively.....

I now watch the gas pedal very carefully as I start her, and have my hand on the key, ready to kill it if necessary...

I can't find any obvious binds in the linkage..

Happened to me twice shortly after I got mine. First time it really freaked me out and I almost tore the ignition switch out turning it off so fast. The linkage seemed to be working fine and there was no binding at all during full pedal travel.

The second time I realized that while I had the clutch and brake depressed during starting, my wide foot was also pushing the gas pedal about 1/4 of the way down. The clutch, brake, and gas are so close together it takes a deliberate effort to make sure you are only pushing on the ones you want, but it hasn't happened again.

Of note is that the center console just to the right of the throttle on a LHD models, this piece can be tight/close to the throttle pedal. If i have a passenger that is using the center console as a brace with his/her feet, this moves the center console to rub against the throttle(!) and makes the throttle 'stick'.

NOTE: i have after market pedals.

So basically, make sure you have good clearance with the center console just to the right of the throttle.

My solution this spring will be to force over the center console part to 'remold it' to the left or bend the pedal metal to the left, away from the console.

I have an '87 328. My problem was a little different but the solution may be the same. After checking the that the floormat was not the cause of the problem I lubed the throttle body cable with some motorcycle lube and the problem disappeared. Good luck.

    Dan,
Where exactly is the location where you lubed?

At the throttle body, as the cable enters the housing toward the front of the car. Its located center near the top of the engine. I had my father press the gas a few times as i was adding the lube. $5 fix.

Thank you for all the help. I'm pretty sure it was the carpet. I noticed it was bunched up near the accelerator pedal. I have also noticed recently that the car would occasionally idle too high. I think this was also due to the carpet. I was sitting at a light today and the car was idling at 2500 RPMs. I tugged the carpet back and the idle dropped right down. I drove the car about 300 miles today and no problems.(This time of year in AZ is the driving season) Thanks again.

    Greg,
No problem. I also have to, every so often, pull the floor mat back at red lights for the same reason. I haven't gotten around to a permanent fix yet.

    Take care
