How do I use a 3 jaw bearing puller to remove my steering wheel without it causing damage. My wheel is on very tight and I can see the possibility of it bending the wheel where it would be gripped from,or is there another way.

The wheel or the hub? Once the Allen head screws are removed, the wheel should just pull off. If not, I would tap gently on the spokes at the back near the hub with a rubber mallet. I would expect it to pop right off.

For the hub, use a puiler like this:

If you have the screws out and the wheel doesn't remove easily, something is wrong.

I hope your talking about the hub, cause if you need a gear puller to remove the wheel you got a problem.

I am trying to remove the wheel and hub as one unit ,without undoing the Allen head screws.

330gt posted the correct method for removing the hub. Trying to use a 3 jaw puller will almost certainly break the steering wheel hub. It is fairly thin cast aluminum at that point and any outward force will bend it open and likely break it as the cast material is brittle.

Really you should remove the steering wheel first and then the hub. A note of caution when removing the allen head screws is DO NOT use a hand held allen wrench as you will strip the heads off. Use an allen socket on a ratchet and make sure the fit of of the fitting to the screw is good before applying torque.

With the right tools the job is easy but if you force using the wrong tools it will be a very long day indeed. Been there done that.

Just curious why are you wanting to remove both together?

What I did was, I wiggle my steering wheel hard as a whole back and forth while pulling and that seems to work for me.

If I need to remove the wheel first, that's fine.what is not clear from the photo is where are the two bolts on the puller fastened to.

That may work if the wheel is not on very tight. One tip is to back off the center nut all the way less one turn. That way when the wheel breaks free it will hit the nut as a stop rather than come flying off.

If memory serves there are 2 threaded holes on the hub where those bolts are screwed into.

I think the 2 M8 holes are only in the collapsible type of hub. The collapsible hub as fitted to 328 cant be removed by the method pictured otherwise the part of the hub which the wheel bolts to would bend. So they added the special holes for a puller. A simple puller can be made by drilling 3 holes in a metal plate.

On my 308 GT4, the three jaws go on the bottom outer edge of the column casing (part #1 on Ferrari Parts, Ferrari Accessories, and Ferrari Performance Products - Ricambi America, Inc.) and the center against the center bolt after the nut -- part 23 on the diagram, is removed (for which people either buy the special tool, or like me, grind a socket to fit).

You cannot take the hub and wheel off together, unless you put the wheel back on after taking the center nut off...but why someone would want to do that, I wouldn't know.

    Bert,

Take the wheel off (Good ones with white threads and good leather are almost unobtainable)
Get the correct puller (they are cheap)
Take the nut off before you user the puller!

I always use anti seize on the allen heads (I had to drill my original ones out)

What can I do now.I've removed the centre nut,all Allen head nuts and the wheel but there are no extra holes in the hub for removal.I'm not going to attach the puller to the thin alloy lower edge of the hub as that will surely get damaged.

When I removed the hub on my '78 308 GTS, I used one of those pullers shown in the second post above. I went to the hardware store, got longer metric bolts to match the hub and a couple of big washers as shown, and did it just like you see in that picture. Go slow when you turn the large bolt in the middle and the hub should pull loose without too much effort. If I recall, I think I picked up the hub puller at a local Sears Hardware. It wasn't expensive, and I've ended up using it a few times.

Ditto on the anti-sieze for Allen screws - first time I took off the wheel I ruined a couple before I saw the problem. Duh.

    Bert,
The puller jaws will not damage the alloy hub. I've pulled mine off four times with no marks. I suppose that if you're really scared, simply put some duct tape on the edges over which you are pulling. While it seems like it is a ton of force, it's really not...and the hub piece is stouter than you'd think.
