Has anyone rebuilt a 360 steering rack? I cannot work out how to remove the rack.

True but would you tell a builder to get someone else in to do his work?

Steering rack £500-600 plus tax, though this is the price for left hand drive.
    Me £000.00.
I'm trying to find what other car this was fitted to with part number 196172. I know the Lamborghini is similar.

    ,
The right half is bent upwards. I have it on the bench but along with another very experienced and knowledgeable mechanic we cannot see how it comes apart? The internal nut on the left side just spins and clicks every 360 degrees. There is a self centering spring in the middle. The local steering overhaul company won't let on.
It's a common TRW steering rack but the don't know what else it's fitted to. A Lamborghini is similar

A picture is worth a thousand words with your question. I have disassembled a TRW rack from a 355 so I can give you some pointers but I have no idea what your question is.

Within a steering rack and pinion is the rack. We cannot work out how to get the rack out.

Thank you for taking the time help.
It's similar-ish but the centre section is narrower, the inner screw caps are different and I cannot see the retaining pin on the ends.
Going to have another head scratch on it this weekend.
I'll keep people posted once we work it out

    Gary,

    Let me make some suggestions.

Post a detailed picture of the parts where you are stuck and ask specific question like "How does this come off?" and it will help your case.

There is no rocket science in power steering rack although there maybe some non-obvious steps. The column has to come off first before the rack slides out.

Figure out how to remove the shims and Teflon insert that apply pressure at the pinion - rack gear mesh, and remove those.
Remove the seals and any circlips keeping the column in place and knock it out.

The inner tie rods may not be staked down. You might just need to have two pipe wrenches to remove them.
