Here's the story. I started driving 19 yrs. ago when I was 16. Had State Farm as car insurance. Had them through the time I bought my house in 98 and added a Homeowners policy to it. So up until last July I have had them as an insurance carrier for both car and home. I sold my only vehicle at this time because it was crazy to have a $700 car payment and hardly ever drove the car. Doing so cancelled my car insurance , but kept them as my home owners insurance.
I'm a police officer and have a take home car-99 Crown Vic. So I had something to drive. Recently decided to go ahead and get another vehicle. Called State Farm to get an insurance quote for the vehicle-05 Toyota Sequioa- A little more I am a Defensive Driving instructor, a Emergency Vehicle Operator Instructor, never had a ticket or accident in 19 yrs. of driving. State Farm told me I was now considered high risk because I had not had car insurance for the last 90 days. $210 a month for car insurance. Is it just me or is this a little f%$#ed up. I called 4 other companies Allstate, Natiowide, Geico and Erie. They all told me they would love to have my business and State Farm is crazy. Anyway best believe I yanked my homeowners policy from them and will never do business with them again.

They pulled the same thing with me a few years back and then, jerked me even more. I switched over to Progressive, who would discount my insurance after a year, and it went down slightly but I had to take the hit, just like you did.

The other thing that State Farm jerked me over with - claims. First of all, when I was 15, and just a name on my parent's policy, before I even had a learner's permit, they had to add me. When I was in an accident in which my friend died next to me, they put a big ding on my insurance, even though I was just a passenger in that car. Secondly, the Thursday night prior to 9/11, my car was broken into, and gutted on the insides. State Farm claimed an "at fault accident over $1k damage" on my policy. They have yet to remove it, even after writing a handful times.

    State Farm sukkuth.

FarmerDave, maybe you can clarify on the insurance gap question in regards to the jacked up policy rates if you do not have insurance for a certain amount of days.

I've had State Farm for a long time and they've always been great. Make sure that it's not your agent who's jerking you around, because I guarantee there's people out there with stories like these for every carrier. When my brother in law had a problem with Allstate, with whom he does big business, he had the luxury of contacting a CO directly to tell him to get f***ed. But I remember when I switched State Farm agents a few years ago the new guy immediately started hustling to get me discounts and so forth. He's always looked out for me.

I actually spoke with the office manager who pretty much runs the office, she told me it was State Farms policy not that particular agent. They can kiss my a$$.

My brother uses State Farm for his Wrangler, Hayabusa, and his wife's caravan. I just e-mailed this to him, and hopefully he will cancel too!!!

I use Progressive for my cherokee and TR. They're a bit high, and haven't given me a reduction in 2 years of being with them.
GEICO sucks a55!!!! They simply would not insure my TR when I got it. After using them for over 5 years on 2 cherokees, and my 308.

Ditto. Never had a problem with SF. Never personally had a claim, but a friend with SF was happy with his claim handling.

Never gotten the kind of hassles that Commerce (MA) gave me.

Insurance companies live and breathe with their actuarial data. It's how they stay profitable - maintaining acceptable premium-to-loss ratios.

Historical data shows that people who have not carried insurance for a certain period of time are more likely to incur losses for the insurance company, than someone who has carried insurance continuously.

285Ferrari, you it sounds like you have a valid reason for the company to make an exception, but then again, I don't know much about State Farms practices. Based on what the girl told you over the phone, you weren't actually talking to your agent, but another state farm agent. Still, your agent has dropped the ball if you don't even know who he is - he doesn't deserve your money.

Last week I encountered a similar issue - a homeowners insurance client has always driven a company car, but decided to buy a fun weekend car. I called the underwriters and explained that she has not had a personal insurance policy, and has always been covered by her employer's policy. They are making an exception. What I didn't ask them is, would they have made this exception if we didn't already have her home business. I don't know.

Randy, those are some major issues. Sounds to me like you didn't have an agent with the juevos to fight battles with the underwriting dept. The good news is, most companies only look back 3 yrs for minor stuff (tix and acc) and 5 yrs for major stuff (dwi).

Let me get this straight -

    You're a COP.

You get a free car, courtesy of the American Taxpayer, of which, you are not responsible for gas/maintenance/payments, etc.

An insurance company is jacking you up, like pretty much everyone on this board, for something silly.

I guess you know how we all feel when our rates skyrocket after getting those $50 throwaway speeding fines you keep writing us for doing 40 MPH in a 35 zone. Or for doing 70 MPH in a 55 highway zone. Yep, I really feel for you. Dude, its called KARMA!

Oh, and by the way, those little tickets don't disappear from your driving record after 3 years. Try SEVEN. And most insurance companies won't even touch you (or write something for a Ferrari) unless your driving record is spotless in the past seven years.

What does me doing my job have to do with the way State Farm treated me???? This thread is about insurance company policy, not the fact that I enforce the law. The only reason I added the fact of me being a police officer is to show the amount of Driver training I have had. I'm sorry u feel this way,but I won't get into a debate about my career.

I HATE STATE FARM. They are the worst insurance company EVER when it comes to customer service, red tape, and what I've found has bordered on outright dishonesty. I would NEVER deal with them EVER.

I have Metropolitan. LOVE THEM! LOW RATES, AWESOME SERVICE and very accessable.

Yeah, I've heard of Met Life... didn't know they did property & casualty. And I might be mistaken, but I don't think they do property & casualty in TX.

I was a State Farm client for about 7 years, had an accident with my '95 Mustang. Black ice, anti-lock braked right into a guard rail. About $2,500 damage. When my policy came due State Farm opted not to renew it.

They like to take your money, but they sure don't like paying out on the coverage they provide.

You're absolutely right. I can't stress enough how important this is.

Here's a litmus test for everyone. Imagine you ran into your agent on the street. If you imagine him walking right past you and not recognizing you, let alone stopping to chat, then go shopping for another agent. Start with agents in the same company, because its easy to switch your account over to another agent who will actually earn your money.

When the fecal matter hits the rotating airfoil, The money you may save by getting your auto insurance by calling 1800 number comapnies or "e-surance dot com" will be nothing compared to the service you'll get from a competent insurance agent who knows you.

I used hanover insurance for a few years now and they are great. They cover my auto and business liability. They treated me very well when I had a claim and were fully understanding that I had a unique car and treated it as such - not like some Ford Taurus. I'd give them a call.

I have heard about stuff like this happening. My friend had a really good, inexpensive car insurance policy that he would transfer from one vehicle to another because canceling the insurance and then adding a new car would triple the price! He would put the insurance on a beater if he was looking for a nice car.

    BTW - for my 308, I use American Collectors. I pay $200 a year for agreed-value, full-coverage insurance. Now that's a deal.

(the only drawback is you can't put more than 2,500 miles a year on the car. Not a problem for me.)

C'mon, to be painfully truthful M.James has a point.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but....

Whereby I do respect the courage officers possess for doing their jobs, that respect is offset somewhat by fact that their role has morphed into little more than collecting revenue for various levels of government these days, at least in all of the cities in which I have lived/worked. FAR too much time, effort and tax proceeds are spent trying to catch the guy driving 35 in a 25. I have known several police officers. They do not worry about speeding tickets (or in some cases even DUI) because they are protected by the brotherhood; some, like 285, have vehicles he/she can use for personal use at taxpayers expense. These are nice perks that insulate police officers somewhat from the reality of the hassles average citizens deal with every single day.

Perhaps his newfound realization of how the system hits the average citizen will persuade 285 to be a little more empathetic the next time he decides whether to hit the flashing lights when discovering a 'suspect' travelling 5-10mph over the speed limit.
