I received a new exhaust with some damage from shipping and my options are to get it fixed with some money back for the trouble plus the expense of the repair, or to ship it back for a new one. I don't mind either option, just as long as the result of the fix option is a clean part with no visible issues.

Note: I am being treated very fairly by the company I bought this piece from and will post those details when this is all cleared up. So, this leads to my technical question...

Can a dent on a stainless steel exhaust tip as pictured be repaired? What are the issues with stretching and finishing stainless steel dented like this? Can it be repaired without being visible?

    Thanks! -Glen

I have other stuff like that taken care of by a really good metal worker on the exact same style piece you're looking at. Hmmmmm?

But mine wasn't as bad as that.

I suspect you'll be a lot happier with a new unit. Let the seller deal with all the problems.

Unless you absolutely cannot wait, send it back. I'm wagering it can be worked out, but why bother yourself? Let the manufacturer deal with it.

...My wife agrees with the both of you! I may be hard headed, so I'm going to have a metal finisher look at it tomorrow regardless. :) I think I am leaning toward just getting the new one shipped though.

I'm just bummed and looking for a fast way to get an exhaust on the car. :(

A VERY skilled metalworker could fix that but unless you already know someone awesome then you are best to send it back. All the time and chasing is not worth it. I had an exact problem and tried to get it fixed. In the end I wasted weeks trying to get it right.

Doesn't look too difficult to fix.

I might make a mandrel to use as a buck so it would stay round. Probably would take a couple hours to finish.

Nuvolari - Spending too much time trying to get it right really is a concern...

2NA - That is the bright side technical feedback I was looking for. I know a true craftsman can do everything necessary to make it perfect, but finding that craftsman is also my concern.

I'm meeting with a very skilled local metal guy tomorrow morning, so I'll see what he has to say.

Stepping back to get a feel for the options is important to me, so all the feedback here is very much appreciated! Thanks!

I'd wager that once you touch you can't send it back.

YOU will probably ALWAYS be able see it too.

Best of luck what ever you end up doing. Been there too. It must some kind of epidemic :)

Stainless steel is actually quite easy to work with, if you know what you are doing, and a good shop should be able to fix the dent and make that pipe look like it never happened.

Best is to return for a new/ replacement.

Labor cost to fix ...who pays?...best for selling company to send new one.

Yes, can be straightened, smooth and polished. Noting if polished SS....but is that a chrome finish? If chome...way to expensive to fix correctly.

Last weekend I took the damaged exhaust to a metal guy I know to assess the damage, and he said he could make the damage disappear. I think he did. Pictures are below, what do you think?

To make sure I wasn't seeing something I had hoped was true but really wasn't, I had a friend take a look. I told my friend that the tips had been damaged and repaired, but I didn't tell him which ones or where. He couldn't pick out the repair work. So I settled with the vendor and so far I am VERY pleased with the outcome. I will be hanging the exhaust on my 308 QV Euro on Friday!

It's refreshing to see everyone working together to fix a problem without weeks of drama. Everyone did the right thing, that's pretty cool. The fix looks good btw.

Very nice repair. I have to say I'm totally surprised. I thought with that crease in the metal, it would never look that good. He did very good work. Now get it on the car and go drive it!!!!!

    +1

Especially since in that first photo it looks like it's actually torn a bit.

So the leading edges of the internal resonators didn't get damaged and look great too?
