It apparently comes in many flavors. I picked up a tube of '22A'. Is this the correct one? Does anyone have any points of caution on how to use it or do you simply coat all contacts and plug away.

You still need to clean the contacting surface first. I would not apply too heavily either. I use a very small hobby type paint brush.

    Troy,

Is there a difference between any other kind of electrical "grease/sealant" and Stabilant? Just wondering as it is much more expensive.....
    thanks

    Thanks Hugh.

Mark - The stabilant is supposed to be world class compared to the others. I don't know whether it is true or not but the stooges on f-chat advocate it so I would go with it. The main advantage I do know about is no risk of conduction across contacts/wires. It is expensive at $40 for a 15ml tube.

It cleans and coats with a highly conductive polymer. Google the stabilant 22 pdf for more detail.

    Here's the link, guys: http://www.stabilant.com/bccomp.htm

I clean the contacts first with a good electrical contact cleaner (e.g., CRC) and then apply the Stabilant with the microbrush supplied with the bottle. Good stuff!

BTW, if I remember correctly, the 22A version has an alcohol carrier that allows it to flow better, then evaporates out, leaving just the Stabilant 22. I have the 22A, I special ordered it way back when through my local VW dealer. It was a big deal when I pulled up in my then 87 328GTS...the receptionist even walked up and asked for a ride...so I obliged. ;)

From my findings while working with the gold plated connectors I was surprised to find more problems over time when the Stab.22 was used than when not. I believe all of the problems can be traced to the amount of product used, not the product itself.

I studied a number of the old connectors that were removed under a microscope and was able to see a film that could be pealed and flaked off the contact area. Granted, I have no way of knowing how it was applied in each situation but I have now seen it numerous times where it was noted that the connectors were cleaned and then treated with the Stab 22. The first clue to this was I could see small fibers stuck to the connectors and after playing a little I was able to duplicate the same look using the supplied Qtips as the application method...It was the cotton fibers from the Qtips I was seeing glued to the connector and a glue equals a film which equals an insulator. My findings show that one drop on a Qtip is about the right amount as long as it doesn't shed any fibers during application, if it looks damp it is too heavy which leaves me with concerns with a model brush. I was testing ladies eye makeup brushes (spent a lot of time at Walgreens makeup counter leaving many with questions unanswered) made of a felt like sponge to eliminate the fiber issue and control the amount applied and finally gave up.

I know how well it works as it has done miracle fixes for me in the past but controlling the application amount I now find is very critical. Hugh has agreed to test another solution and we will see how that works for him.

    Interesting findings, Dave.

My Stab 22 kit came with some very tiny "nylon-type" fibre application brushes which I use. On the other hand, I've been using the Wurth Contact-Ol for years with great results. Again, less is more...

As always, Dave, excellent information. I put a drop on a piece of wax paper and then dip my microbrush into the drop. When you order Stabilant 22a through Ricambi it includes several nylon-tipped microbrushes for application, as the previous poster mentioned.

BTW, do you have a rough time-frame for the release of your gold plated electrical contacts for the F355? Inquiring minds want to know.

Here's a link to another contact enhancer that some claim is far superior to Stabilant. I have not tried it.

If you look back at my posts I used to be a big fan of S22. The s22 was the thick full strength formula the 22a was thinned with alcohol to get it to flow better. I got great results from it early on. Then I found that if I just cleaned the connector regularly that solved the problems better than longer letting s22 just sit in a connection. I found in my 348 that the bosch connectors were very poor in fit quality and nothing as well sealed or as tightly connected as a same year bmw bosch connector. I can only assume that bosch has "seconds" like buying a timing belt from the last cut on a roll and ferrari being the cheap suckers they are buys the seconds. Ferrari connectors in general will actually have dirt past the seals. A BMW connector will be perfectly clean and even difficult to separate. When I did my oil changes as I was waiting for all the oil to drain out I separated the connectors sprayed them out and let dry. I finish my oil change and the connectors would be dry and I would reconnect them. That preventative maintenance seemed to work better than S22 and say a long interval like a 3 year T-belt change.

I've tried the Caig Dexoit, and it works great. Same results, less out of pocket.

Parts are now in hand. Writing a how to and cutting tools up on the lathe over the next few days.

I never tried the brush as I had found the film issue that concerned me before the kits with the brush hit the market and I was working around that. I still think the Stab product is terrific, I just havent figured out how to properly use it

I hesitated in posting this thread because I thought surely there is nothing more to it than simply coating the contacts. Then I thought what the hell... Gotta love this forum. That sounds like a fair summary Dave. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hey Scott - The major was interrupted by the death of a really good friend of mine. But, I've just got back at it full force again and I have a big update coming with lots of good pics.

When are you gearing up for the 355 major?
