What sports cars can you guys recommend for a 17 year old High Schooler? My son's friend is having trouble choosing a car. the price has to be below 30K, the car can be used, and driver comfort/practicallity doesnt really matter. He says he wants a "fast" car but it does not have to be fast stock, it can be modified (forced air induction etc etc) but the costs need to be around 30K or under. Any suggestions?

he thinks those are "poser" cars and are not fast enough for him. He wants to get into Auto-X so that is a factor as well.

Spend 20K on the car and 10K on high performance driving schools for the 17 year old.

    I vaguely remember 17 -- if I had a 'fast' car I'd be dead...

20 is about right for a WRX or Evo I think.

Whatever it is, make sure it's slower and/or less cool than your son's car!

    Saab 9-3 Turbo Aero.

I question any parent who is willing to buy their 17 year old a sports car.

The Saab is sporty, takes well to some mods, looks good (especially with the inexpensive body kit from Saab) and is UBER safe and UBER reliable.

And tell him that if his friends wanna raz him cause his car isnt a civic or a WRX, tell him to tell them that the hottest blondes come from Sweden too.

Used NSX works. Early model. Insurance might hurt if he registers it under his own name. That or a old Vette.
It depends how much sport or how much GT of a car he wants. Personally, I would get him a used 5 series (E39 540 or 530)
Wait a minute. Reading this, he seems like he has his head is in the clouds. Sometime you need to teach humility. Get him a used 525 wagon. One of the slowest BMWs ever made, but still the safety of German engineering.

    Why?

Because in general 17 year old male + FAST sports car == injured people, or at least a much higher chance of that happening than 17 year old male + SLOW sedan. Thats especially true when the 17 year old didn't buy the car with his own money.

hes is a perfectly capable driver, and may attend skip barber racing school. To give you the sense of the kind of car person he is, he would be willing to have an everyday driver with a stripped out interior, roll cage, etc just so his car will be faster and hell be able to autox.

He really truly loves cars and wants a fast/cheap vehicle. What other suggestions do you guys have? I know you guys know a ton about this stuff...

Unless he goes to "Politeness High School", or all of the other kids have $30,000 cars, he might as well paint "KEY ME" in big letters on the sides.

I think you've already gotten 9 fairly good answers.

And if he thinks the WRX STi is a poser car, exactly what does he consider the "real deal?"
    edit: at that price point?

As you can imagine, I have a different opinion on it. In my experiance, females I have gone to school with have been the worst drivers...but thats a story for another time... :)

A good AutoX car is a S2000. Great trany, and you can rev the hell out it over and over. Even better is an Elise, but that is just a bit out of his range. Maybe a spec Miata for a year or 2 and if its ok, get an Elise?

STi is a great perfect car except its more towards the expensive side. What do you think the price of teh Sti will be in a couple of years?

To be honest, I am not sure. I was under the impression that nice used examples of the STi could be had for $30k, but I could be wrong.

Omar, no 17 year old has any business driving a sports car. Not one. Until someone learns road responsibility as well as fiscal responsibility, there is no excuse for them to have a car like that.

I cannot think of a single 17 year old that is responsible enough to own a sports car, especially not one that thinks some of the cars already listed are "poser" cars, or is going to daily drive a stripped down car with a roll cage.

Maybe this kid is an anomaly. Either way, a 9-3 Turbo Aero will serve all purposes. Its a sporty, safe sedan that is very capable of auto-x-ing. Add the body kit and it will look better than most of the cars listed in this thread to boot.
