well technically, none of the cars you list are "sports cars" either...they're GT's ;)

Touche! But actually I was fulfilling his request for the /coupes, since, obviously, he can't have a sports car with room for 2 kids, unless he can swing a McLaren F1. :)

    Why not a sport coupe or cab like the S4? My S5 Cabriolet is the best car I have ever owned...And I too have had M cars...an e36 M3, e34 M5, e39 M5 and e60 M5...

S4 might be a change. I am very partial to the 11 WRX sedan. Peronaly dont love the mustang, but think the Camaro really looks the part. You might also try a used caddy CTSV
seems to get good write ups. Depends where you live. If its texas or FL a yank V8 with Ac is going to be cofortable and no hardship of straight smooth roads. If its mountains the subie might fit the bill. One thing, kids really hate going in the back of a 2 door car, so considder a 4 door.

BTW if youre feeling a little brave a Maserati Qp can be had for your budget and ticks all the right boxes.

2011 Shelby GT 500, though used ones won't be $40,000 for two years or so.

    In the meantime 2003-4 996 C4S.

I'd say Mazda RX-8. You can pick up a brand new one inside of your price range, and the back seats are actually capable of holding adults. Plus, what today is more different than a rotary engine?

    And another.

    PS;
Just how did civilization get this far without child car seats ?
    Mind boggling.
I believe Porsche designed the original's rear seats for children. Certainly not for adults.
    No ?

Still sticking to my original vote for the 996 turbo. Best bang for the buck without a doubt.
Not sure how much S5's are going for but that could be a nice second choice for a sporty coupe.
I think you should get a coupe, but if you are looking into sedans, S4, C/E55,..im sure theres more.

You could always get a classic muslce car if that's your thing?

    996 Turbo!

prob the new mustang v8. the only problem w/ the 911 is that your kids will out grow it quickly. Driven the audi s5 and would like call it a sports car.
i would have said GTR but I dont think its at 40k yet.

Those two beat out anything on the list for fun factor and usability.

    'Just say no 'to the..

    S5
    GT500
    Challenger
    RX-8
    IS-F

These will leave you disappointed. They are too heavy, underpowered, and/or no more roomy than the M3s or less fun than the M5.

You have some test driving to do. If you don't mind having a fling with a coupe rather than a long term keeper, you have more flexibility.

    You definitely won't find a GT-R for 40k. :)

I know, but why downgrade? Some of those choices are truly boggling.

This is exactly what I ended up doing - The wife said I needed something with a backseat for kids, and the AWD was a bonus since we get a decent amount of snow every winter. I couldn't find one optioned out the way I wanted, so I ordered one last week..

    Can't wait! :)

GTO? Plenty of room for kids in the back, decent interior with fantastic seats, good grunt and light-ish on fuel. I'd check one out.

I vote for the Caddy CTS V.
Won't be in the 40k price range the OP wants to spend for a couple years.

    Cheers
