    Hello,

Just sold my E39 M5 and I am now looking for a used fun sports car/coupe with back seats where I can take my kids (3 and 5) for weekend trips and etc. My budget is around $40k.

    I would appreciate any recommendation!

    Thanks so much.

Full disclosure: I've had E36, E46 M3s along with E39 M5 before. So, I would like something different...

I have 6 year old twins, and since you said weekend trip, unless you pack really light and use the passenger seat for storage, it leaves out the best choice a 996 Porsche, Since have had the BMW's already the only other car that I would suggest is the Maserati Coupe, I had a 03 and there would be enough room for weekend bags.

early Cayenne Turbo. no seriously: fast, handles pretty well, prestige nameplate, etc. and your kids will still fit when they're 13 and 15, unlike most of these recommendations. and amazingly, they're now in the $40k range.

Maserati GranSport. Are they at 40k yet?

  8. I saw a new purple Dodge Challenger with the 6 speed in Florida last week. Normally I would not want a purple car, but this car was so cool. The shifter was a hurst white knob, the brakes where Brembos. 6.1 liter Hemi. You can get a NEW one like that for under 45k, and a used one for less. The other cars I am considering is a Porsche 911 variant, and a new(er) WRX STI.

996 turbo. The back seats aren't for adults but you can fit a couple kids back there. The three year old will need a car seat so that might be a bit tricky but I think Porsche at one time made a specific car seat for their rear seats.

Cayenne Turbo has plenty of room for a weekend trip and is plenty fast. Decent gas mileage considering as well (~19 mpg highway).

With that said I wish I had my 2002 XK8 again. A car seat is not reasonable, but a backless booster seat would work. Current style is nice too, but I had a coupe that still looks great to me after all these years. Get a 03+ model year with the 6-speed AT and 4.2L engine. Even XKR's with a few miles from 2006 are under $40k.

Or even a 308 GT4. Another option might be a 456 (Not sure what the prices on those are now, but may be around 40k?).

    You won't regret a ferrari.

If you want newer and reliable, I guess you can't go wrong with a Porsche 911 (996).

Hmmm... Upkeep might kill ya, but I'd bet you can still find a nice Lamborghini Espada under $40k.

Thanks you, all, for the reply.

    1) The 996 Turbo sounds promising. Can I really fit 2 car seats in the back??? If so, that would be awesome.

    2) Can you really get the e90 m3 for ~$40k??

I have 6 year old twins and I put two car seats in for them when they are in the back of my 997. I have to remove the bottom seat cushion, and it took awhile to find a seat that fits, but if you go with the 996 PM me I'll get you the make of the seat I use.

you had the best "sports car" option for a family w/ two kids. the e-39 m5 is very tough to beat. the only performance upgrade mentioned is really the 996 tt.

again, the m5 can do it all!

Funny how many people think sedans (and Cayennes) are sports cars.
    I would go with:
    911
    GT4
    RX8
456 (the upkeep might be rough though)
    Espada! (ditto plus)

a few dollars in mods and it will out perform a M5 pretty easily. You can still get a stick shift, easy to mod, cheap, reliable, etc...

Actually, headers, exhaust, intake and tune can get you to or past 996 turbo power

What do you guys think about the previous generation of Audi RS4 - V8? Would it be too similar to the E39 M5 I had? How is the RS4 compared to the S5? The S5 looks beautiful..

I loved everything about the M5, but just wanted something more small / nimble.

This is from a 964 but I'm pretty sure their rear seats are even smaller than a 996.

    1) two car seats-yes. two boys over the age of 8-probably not. very little leg room in the 911; not much head room either.

    2) $40k might be a stretch (higher miles, weird color/options, etc) but you can find quite a few of them on ebay in the mid-$40's.
