Friend of mine told me he got snapped by a speed camera the other day, but the camera was on the opposite side of the road intended for drivers of the opposite direction and was asking me whether that would catch him. Anyone know the answer?

As you approach cameras on the other side of the road if you floor it just before your level with the camera, you can make the camera flash which spooks drivers going the correct way past the camera at the correct speed :)

    Never had a ticket.

I would have thought so. TBH most people think that its not possible, but until someone actually can say without a shadow of a doubt then i suppose its possible. Just never heard of anyone tbh.

Let us know and fingers crossed that he is.

Just checked with Mrs Alsaautomotive and she reckoned she was doin' about 75mph in a 60 zone and may have put her foot down "somewhere around the camera".
There was definetely no other traffic and the camera undoubtedly flashed.
This was in October last year and we've heard nothing.
    Good luck.

I regularly make a gatso on the opposite side of the road flash as I come out of London on the A316. The thing is that there are none of those white lines painted on the tarmac on my side of the road and I'm sure these are what they use to calculate how fast you were going. Anyway, I haven't had a ticket!

When you are comming down from the A40 into shepards bush (london) you can floor it and it triggers the camera on the opposite side of the road even though there is a road divider. And it happens so often. I drive on that road every other day and i floor it just to see the camera trigger. hahahaha

I've always thought not. Somebody said something to do with not having permission to take your photo face-on...? Probably an urban myth though.

That said, with no markings on the road, which they use to prove that you are moving, I wouldn't think it would stand up in court.

Does the same on the A3 when you go into London just past the Robin Hood junction

Urban myth indeed - there are plenty of forward facing camera's about.

But I've been setting off opposite side cameras for years, never had any comeback. Suspect its because you're usually past the camera by the time of the second flash hence nothing to varify the speed with.

    So go have fun :)

Yeah me too set them off hundreds of times, as long as the gatso is on the opposite side of the road and is facing you. Its someyhing to do with privacy laws- not being able to take a photo of you from the front.

I do it on purpose just to make them flash and never had a ticket.

Im 90% sure that even if you make it flash, you won't get a ticket.

The reason why they take a picture of the back of the car is so the number plate is clear and readable in both pictures (2 flashes - 2 pictures)

As you drive towards a camera you maybe able to make it flash and your front number plate will probably be in view but by the time the second picture is taken the front of your car will probably be out of the picture.

They need the number plate to be clear in both pics for it to stand up in court, also motorbikes don't have front number plates and there would be no way of tracing the driver.

There are forward facing cameras that take your picture between to points then work out your average speed and if your over the limit your nicked, but i have only seen these on stretches of the M4 around Bristol & South Wales.

Generally i don't worry about them if they are facing me, only when they are on the same side. Get a snooper to be on the safe side (or something similar).

Yes as far as i know and have experienced they can not currently prosecute is flashing face on however its only a matter of time and i read about it in the papers over a year ago.

i dont think it has anything to do with privacy, more a health and safety issue.
