Contemplating stereo and perhaps using the rear shelf behind the seats for speakers but perhaps it may be blocked directly by the seats themselves. Figured I would ask if anyone has done a sane behind the seat rear deck install for speakers not just subs. Kind of hate the idea of using the doors with the weak wiring and have limited appetite to rewire the quick connects to facilitate larger speaker wires.

Sure seems like 6.5 components could be housed there like bookshelf speakers on the home, tweeters on far end pointing toward window and woofers are more omni-directional so less an issue it would seem.

Not sure about the imaging behind the seats given seat blockages but the cockpit is small it may work. Anyone done it, or been in a car with it done that way?

I designed a set of boxes for J&L 6.5 subs with my neighbor a couple years back. He is a CF fabricator and had started on them but had a problem with the resin at one point. He also had to move to NH and had more life issues come up. Then the stupid kid hit me in the 348 and totaled it. Next time I saw him I told him to go ahead and sell them They will fit at a slight up angle. And mine was a Spider too. There is enough volume to use fill in the boxes. I have the same speakers in my 360 now with cheap Amazon square boxes. I didn't measure correctly (long throw magnets) and had to use 3 rings to make them fit. They sound OK tapped with a reversible patch to the sub cable (A4 pc power?). Then one of the terminals got broken when my alternator was swapped. Never got around to fixing it properly but they work. I like bass and feel plenty, even without pushing them too much. Those are great speakers.

Do you have just the subs behind the seat or the components too?
I am wondering about putting it all back there, two 6.5" subs and a set of 6.5" components.

No door or dash speakers I am wondering about, everything behind you.

Ugh..... I was all like geez he posted the wrong like that's and engine not speakers lol
    1. The sounds of the engine is all you need!
    2. Ferrari have stereo?
    3. I did not even know Ferraris had Stereos!
    4. Who needs anything but the music of the engine?
    5. I prefer the engine over any stereo!
Yes yes we know, back to regularly scheduled program of sticking speakers behind the seats instead of the doors...

Thanks Dave! I was thinking the same thing. My car had a full Stereo install and thankfully Eddie pulled it all out.

I am using good speakers in stock location for basic install but good speakers and amplification. I pulled the radio and have the blackout plate installed with small hidden digital alpine amps. Sounds great, but generally only lists to my capristo exhaust.

These cars just are not made for good audio and most installs hurt the car, in my opinion. If anything, have a custom box made for behind seat out of view and run Focal speakers in stock locations. Note, getting into stock locations and not damaging anything is not easy. [emoji41]

FYI, you can do quite well in the car with proper tuning.
I have scanspeak 1" Beryllium tweeters next to the front air vents, then 6.5" scanspeak revelators in the door stock locations, with a helix DSP in the frunk. Sounds fantastic with the engine off. Once the engine is on, you lose 200Hz and below, and I assume that's what you were trying to fix with the rear shelf. I did a lot of research for this, and you can fit 2x Focal Flax 10" subs on the rear shelf angled in a box that would blend in with the rest of the car and use the original lines. Haven't gotten to this project yet, but it's on this list for the upcoming year after a major major service.

More wanting to update the entire speaker set up (it is like a 1970's kitchen radio) but I don't want to run wires to the doors.

More like this but put in 6.5 components.

Some one on here built a set for a 348. I lent him my car for a fit and he gave me a set of beautiful boxes with JBL speakers built in. Softwaredrone is his call sign I think. Look it up.

I am not much a stereo person so I have it in my cabinet, not used. I might set it up in my garage.

to each his own.. I simply do not understand this..? ive owned my car 4 years.. and have not turned on the radio once or thought let me listen to the radio/cd while driving??
and whoever in the past, put a flip screen, amp in trunk and sub in middle of seats.. which to me is a huge eye soar..
but haven't been bothered to tear it out yet..

I listen to radio in any other car.. when I drive the 355 it is a time of peace and appreciation.

    Tony,
From LA to SF is 6 hours of driving through some of the most boring landscape on I-5. Blasting down the freeway at 95 will earn you a ticket at $500. So the next best thing is to cruise at 80 while listening to some talk show. You might not need a large stereo for that but you do want it to make some noise.

When blasting down the road on a drive with local friends, I turn off my radio and concentrate on hitting the apex and double clutching.

Did you still fit the door speakers behind the carpet (which is how the 355s are at least)? For years I didn't even realise there are speakers in the door, i thought it was all coming out of where the tweeters are by the vents! I'm thinking I might remove the little corner of carpet (& keep it safe) and then fit speakers in the same place but with a new surround.

I have not turned the stereo on much as the engine sounds so good (as I think we all agree), but there are times on a long motorway trip when some music (perhaps some italian opera can even enhance the experience) is nice. The point being, Ferrari fitted a stereo, (unlike McLaren with the F1) so it being a premium car sold at a premium price (F355 - £87k new) they should have fitted premium speakers. My Fiat Coupé (£27k new & made by Pininfarina) has speakers that are as perfect as OEM speakers get. But then there are so many things that Ferrari could do better if only they listened to their customers! (they're still making that sticky dash).

Yes, fitted behind the carpet grille. The vent speakers and the doors are all covered up with stock materials.

I already removed the amp in my frunk, next step is to remove head unit and speakers.
Next spring I'll fab a support that will clip onto my existing rear shelf trim and will hold a small Bluetooth speaker.
I think it'll be a good extra to have for the rare times that I listen to anything while driving the 348.

That's a good size speaker. Is it bigger than the original? I would have thought that playing through carpet is the root of the original's very lacklustre sound. I'm not an acoustic engineer, but I am a musician and I would never have PA speakers covered all over with carpet that's for sure. It's hardly 'acoustically transparent'.

Correct you do not understand why someone would want to listen to a stereo, there is a difference between stereo and audiophile system. And yes what you describe is an eye sore I agree with that, flip screen ugh.

You may h ave it on both sides I would not know but in the event you do not, the dynamat/dead skin or what not works FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR better on the inside of the outer door skin, it kills road noise and resonance.

the flip screen goes down, which I close it every time starting the car.
I appreciate the whole sound system/subs etc.. for the tuner cars.. which I did long ago in the past on the 350Z..
but imo waste of time/money/effort especially for a 348/355. its like trying to force something on the car that is just not meant to be.
and adds no value to the car, if anything reduces it..

Ahh yes I did tuner cars too back in the day. I imported a JDM STI spec C. 550 at the wheels on a dyno dynamics no less. I hear you on should not be there, feeling forces, makes less sense i a ferrari over a tuner car, I see your point you rnot wrong but I don't fault anyone for doing it even if I don't understand it.

But for the record I am not talking about flip screens, subs, rear view cameras, monster systems I am simply asking if anyone stuck coax speakers driven off their head unit or modest amp behind the seats instead of the doors. No subs, no racks of dsp, no gaudy fiber glass enclosures, no subs in the foot wells, no subs behind the seats , no subs between the seats, in fact no subs at all....

JUST SIMPLE SPEAKER SYSTEM WITH LIKE 45 WATTS BEHIND THE SEATS INSTEAD OF THE DOORS. THATS ALL. This forum....

I'm not an "audiophile" but I like music in my cars. I made my own speaker boxes for my 355's rear deck, I sized the speaker boxes to be about the size of the "cubby" and matched the boxes inner side's angle to the cubby's sides. I had them covered in matching leather and stitching. It all looks (to me) like it came from Ferrari.

I mounted each speaker box to each other with a rigid and thin metal "strap" (Home Depot), the strap runs behind the cubby, so nothing is screwed into the car itself, the cubby holds down the strap and the strap holds the speaker boxes. I run a 430 head unit because I wanted CD, and a Rockford Fosgate amp hidden where the CD 6pack goes in the frunk. I ran all new wires that I bought for car stereo sound systems. The original stereo equipment is in a box on a shelf (and is not for sale). I use JL Audio speakers, 5.25" 2-way in the boxes, 6.25" in the doors and the tweeters in the dash; no sub.

I've had this setup for years and am very happy with it. Often I just sit in the car in the garage with the music on sipping a scotch and just chill.
