I couldn’t figure out how to search for this topic so here it goes. I want a spare tire for my 2003 360 Modena. Are there after market tires that fit, is there some hardware for the trunk, and does the potential flat rim/tire fit in the trunk?
Here is a link that should help you https://www.eurospares.co.uk/parts/ferrari/360-modena/brakes-wheels/spare-wheel-and-equipment-optional-40694
Yes, what do you do with the "replaced" tire? You change that big, wide, dirty tire in the rear that's flat. That's assuming you can get a jack under the car that's now much lower to the ground. Do you kick out your female passenger and put it in the front seat? Or do you lash it to the glass trunk lid? It won't fit in the "Frunk", will it? OK, maybe tip the AAA tow truck guy and have him take it back to the shop. Disclaimer: I have a mini-spare in my 360 and I've often thought about the day when I get a flat.
I looked for over 1 year before I found one on eBay that included the entire kit and jack. As far as what do I do with the flat tire if I can't fit it in the car I carry a big trash bag to stick and it in, then hide it in the bushes and go back later for it.
I hit a pot hole valentines night with my new Mercedes and it tore the run flat tire and bent the rim. Had to be towed home as the Germans don’t believe in spare tire either. This got me re thinking the spare situation
360 spares come up from time to time. Be patient or be proactive. Post here; save search on eBay; contact exotic wrecking yards; have them put you on a list. There are also a set of straps that accompany the spare setup.
I have the factory spare tire option on my 2003 360 Spider. In addition to the straps there are brackets that attach to the floor and top part of the Frunk that are used to secure the tire with the leather straps mentioned above. There are also additional leather straps that secure the tool kit inside of the spare tire. The straps on my 360 were in terrible shape, literally hanging on my a thread. One of my Ferrari friends knew of a saddle shop that reproduced a new set of straps for his 360 Modena and my Spider. I was able to locate the Tool Kit straps at Ricambi.
I have the spare and the kit installed. Since I vacation alone, no problem with the flat. The same part (the wheel, not the whole kit) works for the 456, 456M, 360, and F430. If you buy one, note that the tire will probably be ancient. Change it to a fresh one immediately.
Have an AAA membership, if you have to call them, they know to send a rollback. That's been my compromise solution. IIRC from older posts you lose a lot of trunk space with the spare, so it's problematic if you want the reassurance of having a spare on a road trip but not much room for luggage. Also, if you have CCM's then you need to make sure that the spare fits over the calipers.
^^^^^^ This I have a 355 and ......maybe its just me ........but the lack of spare impacts where I take the car and for how long. I still have the factory toolkit and a 21 year old can of Ferrari Fix a Flat. Fix a Flat makes a mess inside the tire and is only good for certain types of punctures. So this past winter I began a quest to find a spare tire. If you check Ricambi.... the wheel listed is the same part number for the 355 and the 360. Since 355 spares are extremely rare and 20+ years old....it seemed to make more sense to find a 360 wheel and space saver tire. After months of searching, two popped up on ebay. One was in terrible condition and the other looked pretty good. $645 later which included ($90) shipping and I had a spare tire. The rest was pretty easy....low profile scissors jack, breaker bar, a 22mm socket, spare tow hook and a a ToughBuilt tool bag (all in $150). I was less concerned about installing the "correct factory spare tire option" than I was just having a usable spare. The tire lays flat in the front boot. Allegedly, the front or back tire will fit in the boot if I ever have to use the spare. So for $795 I have piece of mind. If I ever sell the car.....I'm willing to bet that I'll double my money selling the spare! If anyone needs the leather piece shown below...send me a PM. The straps will need to be replaced but the center is in good condition. Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you go the route of getting an OEM spare, I can put you in touch with someone who has the patterns for the spare tire hardware and can replicate them for you.
Just to clarify, I the hardware patterns I am referring to are the soft parts...the leather straps, not the formed metal brackets. Sorry for the confusion....
What about the Volvo V70R or S60 spares? Didn't someone else also used a spare from a Jag XJ? Same bolt pattern and was initially slated to work with a 15mm spacer. (Volvo spare pictured) Image Unavailable, Please Login
Now that you mention it, there was a thread in the 456/456M/550/575M forum in which a couple of guys found Volvo spares that worked. Maybe you can search for it there (I don't have time at the moment). So if you find one that works, it will work for the 456, 456M, 550, 575M, 360, and 430 (Except for the CF brakes cars, or cars with a big brake kit).
I went down that Jaguar rabbit hole and it made less and less sense. Jaguar spares and spacers.....then custom wheel bolts. By the time I finished assembling the parts on paper I had a $500 Jaguar solution......it was easier to get a 360 space saver that was designed for the car (with much higher resale value). https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/inexpensive-spare-tire-solution.278446/
Yeah, I got my correct version when I had the 456M, and now it is in my 360, and no spacers or anything is required. But some guys like to find other solutions. Here are some threads I found: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/456-spare-tire-kit-for-about-100.372763/ There may be a 19" spare for the 430 I have forgotten about. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/a-more-expensive-456-spare-tire-kit.403137/ This is the kit I put together for touring in my previous 456M. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/360-space-saver-spare-for-456-perfect.376453/
I have this and it works perfect with a spacer. Supposedly a jaguar space saver aluminum spare also works. FWIW it fits in the front trunk no problem. There is NO WAY I'd spend $1000+ on a ferrari spare that does the same thing as a $90 one above..
