Does anyone have a line on a 400(i)/412 engine for sale for or an idea of what I would expect to pay for one when I find one? Idealy, I'd like one that requires a rebuild since I'll be doing some hop-up work on it anyway.

I'm plotting a a v12 fro my 308 to replace the supercharged QV engine I'm currently running and I need an engine. I know the 330 engine will fit as it's been done, but they are quit pricey, at least for this project. The particular model 400/400i/412 isn't really important, but I guess the bigger 412 would be my first choice.

You're in luck. There's a guy advertising a 412 engine on ferrari market letter. He says only that he's asking less than the cost of a rebuild.

Thanks but I'm really looking for one that is clearly in need or a rebuild and cheap since I'm going to have to take it a part anyway, may have to weld and move the intake ports, and I may not be ably to get it in the car :(

They say a 330 engine fits or a 365 if you use 330 heads but they are pretty expensive these days and going from 3 liter to 4 liter isn't really worth the effort I don't think....but to get to nearly 5 liters...that's a different story amd worth a bit of time to look into.

Any idea what the rest of the car would go for after I pull the engine?

Here's a follow-on question....I've seen pictures of different engiens and I just realized that the there is more than 1 version of trans mount....it looks like the automatic cars have a GM shape, but the standard cars still use the ferrari shape. Is that right? That would mean I really need an engine from a standard car I think

WHEW! I thought it was fellow Fchatter Aleventhal's car but after looking at side by side pictures I don't believe it is. Alex's car has front rectangular markrs, the Forza car doesn't.
Which leads me to the next question; does anyone know this car?

I don't know what it would be worth whole, but you could get your money back if you parted it out. I would give my left arm for a windshield right about now, and there are dozens of small parts I could use as well. There are plenty of guys on here with similar want lists. Parting a car out is a major hassle, but I would venture to say you could get your engine virtually for free if you did.

Your 1st pix shows engine ready to bolt up to a 5-sp tranny, 2nd pix to the torque converter of an automatic. In my Spare Parts Catalogue it shows set-ups for both GT & Auto versions. What your 2nd pix is showing is part #108999--"flange between engine and gearbox" & part # 111175---"flange" attached to the back of the block which receives the auto gearbox. 1st pix is absent of these parts, and is ready for 5-sp tranny hook-up(clutch housing with/in tranny cast). The 2nd motor doesn't look quite the same. My catalogue shows both auto and manual set-ups--- I would only imagine that if two different blocks were used, the catalogue would reflect it. One quick call to Bill Pollard/Sport Auto in Gaylordsville, Ct.(860-350-1515) could render you 'the correct answer'.
Don't know which would be harder (or longer of a wait), grap the car with the auto now(so as to start the rebuild), or wait for a motor/5-sp (as a pair) to become available. There were only 353 400(carb) 5-speeds, 427 400i(inj) 5-speeds, and 226 412 5-speeds in the world---and that is it!! I'm not certain of the 330 & 365 blocks, but they are awfully close in size(just a change in sleeves and rods could make the difference). And Luigi Chinetti(NY,NY), a driver for Enzo's Scuderia, played a big part in the development of the automatic tranny set-up on the 365 for the American market.
Can't imagine Ferrari manufacturing two different blocks for such a limited production vehicle, but I could be mistaken(bores remained the same for the 365 & 400 Colombo blocks @ 81mm, strokes increased by 7mm to 78mm in the 400, and bore increased by 1mm to 82mm in the 412).... Just ask Bill.
Are you looking to keep your set-up 'all-Ferrari', or can a transitional flange be foundaried to mate to another manufacturer's tranny? I'm sure we're all really curious as to how the whole assy. will fit in the back of a 308. Keep us all posted on your conversion please.

    I show:
    147 - carb'd 400 5 speeds
    424 - 400i 5 speeds
    270 - 412 5 speeds

But for those of us in the states it gets worse than that if you consider that there were less than 70 400i and less than 50 412 5 speeds brought to the US.

Thanks, I got the same answer about the flange on the other thread and now looking, I can see the ferrari patter bolts holding on the chevy pattern flange...I just got nervous.

There were 4 308 v12 conversions done about 20 years ago...well one of the 4 has been under way for 20 years now. It comes up every few months in the 308 section. The person who did the first one wrote a book detailing what he did and the other 3 basically follow that. He says a 330/365 SOHC fits and that is all that fit, so that’s that. It can be mated up to the 308 trans, so work is required, but it's not that bad.

Well these days a 330/365 SOHC is really expensive and doesn't make a ton of hp anyway. The later 365/400/412 engines are much cheaper, but the book says they don't fit........I think it's time to have another look at the problem. The blocks are the same or very close the best I can tell, so mating up is not a problem. The problem is the heads. With the intake coming between the cams, it makes them too tall to fit under the 308 deck lid and too wide to fit in the 308 engine bay...not good.

My first thought was that since I have a milling machine and a welder, I could just move the intake ports.....but that's a lot of work. My better thought was that the BB and TR engines were based of the 60 degree 365....so the BB and TR heads can probably be put on a 365/400/412 engine, have the ports going the right way and can be made to flow pretty well (particularly the TR heads)....so that is what I'm going to try to do I think.

I found a good running 365 that I can have without the heads for $5k, which doesn't seem to bad. I'd like the bigger 400/412, but I guess I could just spin the 365 faster to make up the difference. I may hold off and keep looking for a deal on a 400/412.

Here's the thread running in the 308 section, it's got pictures of one that was done:

Just got off the phone with Peter @ Forza Motorsports, we both felt the same @ blocks being the same along with the 365GT4/2+2. After commenting on the v-12/tranny install, he mentioned that 3 of 4 conversions have been done over the years that he knew of---That's when I realized you didn't need the tranny, just the config. of the back of the block to take the transaxle. He also mentioned that he thought there was a kit avail. for the conversion, but didn't know where. The pix on the conversion looks like it has carbs front and center between the banks. Were you going the carb route as well? The fuel metering distributors are real space busters, as they mount to the side of the engine on top of the air filter boxes. For extra space, there's always that trunk.

Uh? What side-by-side pictures? The 308 GT4 is in the UK - note the registration plate. The owner posted about the price he was offered for the 400 engine a few months ago. No need to update your US database!

Yeah, I just need an engine, it will get mated to the 308 trans. There is no kit anywhere, the closest thing is a book written by the first person to build one....and he says SOHC engines only for his install method, so there will be some new ground to cover here.

I will almost certainly switch to TR heads, the only other option is to do an extreme make-over on the 365/400/412 heads and move the intake port. I will without a doubt be running EFI, probably a 12 throttlebody set-up, but it ma be a plenum type intake design to save space.

I bought a 400i engine that was slightly fire damaged (the one in the photo above) for £600. I sold it soon after for £1200 and the buyer seemed extremely pleased at the price! That was in July 2007. The car it came from was showing 50,000 miles.

Think I confused you Aidan. I'm not talking about a GT4.
Take a look at www.forzamotorsports.com and look at the wrecked 400i. I thought it was Leventhal's at first glance.

that is almost always the case....even for simpler things. getting tired? It's cheaper to just sell the car and buy another one than to have your engine rebuilt....crazy.

Well Mark, I wish you the best of luck. I found my engine on an Ebay ad for someone parting out a 400i. As I said on another thread, I think 400s have turned the corner, because I haven't seen any really cheap ones (<£6k) in the UK this year.

Have you considered an engine from the 365 GT4 2+2 which has carbs, and potentially better breathing than the 400i?

What a shame, as it looks like it was in reasonable shape before the crash. That's one of the downsides of these cars, the high cost or sheer unavailability of crash parts means that it doesn't take very much of a crash to total the car, even if the insurance company agrees that the value should match current market prices.

Here are my numbers on 5 speed production numbers:

400: 145 (412 book by Automobilia) or 147 (by Ferrari Market Letter)

    400i: 424

    412: 270 (FML)

Hey, with friends like this , who needs enemies. Just joking! I think Dan's trying to say that they are out there(once in a long while)....I remember this purchase---garden planter, coffee or end table; something to that effect. Maybe this is the motor that's up for sale @$9500., this could be a hot business to get into---selling 'slightly fire damaged' motors.

I am considering a 365 and have found a good running one that the guy will sell me headless for 5k. As I said, I can't use the 365/400/412 heads, they just won't fit. It will almost certainly be getting 4 valve TR heads which breath very well and certainly will be EFI.
