I am currently the 3rd owner of my 84 308 QV and after a little research I was able to contact the original owner, so I asked him if he remember how much he paid for the car, he said I remember it like it was yesterday I paid
$66,000 out the door. Feb. of 1985. Unfortunately he lost the sticker price.

$66,000 1985 dollars equals $124,199 in 2006 dollars when inflation is factored in. These were expensive cars.

Considerable increase during the course of the production run. My first 77 GTB stickered for $34,500, including a premium for the rosso rubino metallic paint. I bought it used in '82 for $31,500; at that point new ones were about $45,000,iirc. Hopefully someone has a more accurate answer.

My 1976 North American 308 GTB Fiberglass was $29,525 when it sold new. My car sold to its second owner for $59,900 in 1988. Both sales at Algar.

Enzo Ferrari's recent death had something to do with that.

funny this thread should appear. I found a 1977 'What Car?' magazine in my parents loft the other day and was surprised to see a BMW 633 CSi (14,799 GBP) cost more new than a 308 GTB (13,993 GBP). Which of those can you now pick up for less than beer money?

So if it cost $61K 21 years ago, and today it is worth say 40K; that means it holds 66% of its value over the past 2 decades.
That's alot better than the new Fords of GM's that drop like a stone the moment the contract is signed.

But if you're going to play those games, you also need to account for time value of money and inflation.

    Fun car, lousy investment...

Cars usually are not good investments... Ferraris are expensive to maintain. With that being said, 308s ARE going up and will continue to go up in value....

The ads had the used 308's priced about $35,000 around 1981-84. I have a few around here. Pick up an old R&T from back then when they had a pretty good classified section and see.

    Yes indeed.

Still, 1988 saw a significant rise in the selling prices of used Ferraris. It was a very good year.

If I recall correctly, my Dad's '86 328 was about 70+ new(actually discounted in San Diego if my story is correct) and sold for near $100 after Enzo died, maybe 1989, maybe earlier. He probably drove it 500 miles all told but a nice profit. He also had a Prugna one, an '83 308 GTS that he also sold for a good profit and off loaded a needy euro BMW 323i in trade in the same deal. That did seem to be a time for Ferrari's to be an investment but who new, you had to be lucky.

great thread. i wish someone would reproduce the window stickers if you provide them the info from the cars. Pontiac Historic Services has been doing this for Trans Am and GTO guys for years.

Magazine articles from the time say that the base price of my 1975 308GT4 was $19000. My car has done a great job holding its value as long as you ignore inflation and $35,000 in receipts that came with the car.

BTW, when I just recently got my car a friend mentioned that he bought his very first new car - a Ford Courier Pickup - that same year. It cost him $2200. Helps put a measly $19k in perspective.

I remember being just out of high-school (1973-4) and going to look at Ferrari's at Ferrari of Los Gatos. At that time, they were on Bascom Ave (LGS Rd. ?) & Lark.

And I'll always remember the Fly Yellow 246 Dino they had in the showroom for what might have been a couple of years. Every so often, I'd drive my '62 Ford Fairlane down there to look at that car. It looked like it belonged on a race-track. And I couldn't believe you could actually buy one for the street.

At the time I as working at some crappy used car lot on San Carlos, where they had a guy pole-sitting for a year as a publicity stunt. They sold high-end sports cars. A lot of Vette's, a few Maserati's, a Mangusta that was for sale for $10K, a Cobra (rolling chassis) for $5K. Stuff like that. But that job didn't last long. And they never paid me for a sale I made, so I quit.

I think you could buy a new Vette for about $5K back then. But the Dino was $12,500. It seemed like a fortune. And it was (at least for me) back then.

    What a steal!

I should'a listened to that guy on TV, in the white lab-coat touting the vitures of Control Data Institue, instead of taking a job as a waiter at Sambo's! Maybe I could have bought one.

It's funny though to be able to look back and think, "My God, the Ford would probably sell today for more than that $12,500!".

I have the original hand written sticker from 1977. Griswold motors in Berkley, CA sold my '76 new for $36,800. I have a document that the original owner wrote requesting to purchase one from this dealer back in mid 1976. He was told it would be a year long wait as that dealer was only getting about one or two a month. I will try to scan the docs in for all to see.

First, let’s not confuse “list price” with actual price paid. Daytonas were discounted during the 1970’s gas crunch and I remember a local 512M that took forever to sell after the 1990’s “bust”; and we many of us would rush to buy a current F430 at “list”. That said, it is easier to track down figures of list price (stickers or articles) or asking price (from ads) than it is to confirm actual sales prices. I found a few articles that showed list price of a 1978 308GTS was $37,649; an 1982 GTSi was $56,650 and a 1984 GTS QV was $59,500. Using CPI, in today’s dollars these prices are $116,353 (for the 1978), $118,289 (for the 1982) and $115,392(for the 1984)

Some analysis for fun (each set of #s is for the 78, 82, and 84 respectively): the published horsepower of the cars were 205, 205, and 230, so the list price per unit of HP in today’s CPI dollars would be $567.57, $577.02, and $501.70. An F430 has 483 HP, which calculate to be a list price (based on the 308’s CPI$/HP) of $274,136; $278,700; and $242.321. Putting aside taxes and dividends, if instead of buying the Ferrari, you bought a Dow stock index, the DJIA was $769.92, $871.10, and $1,220.58 in Jan of each year, and was $12,343.21 yesterday, resulting in stock that would be worth $603,581, $802,712, and $601,698 respectively. None of this takes maintenance or the joy of driving into account.

I bought my 1982 308GTSi 20 years ago (Dec 1986) for $30,000 from the first owner (who bought it new in 1983 for a premium over list….I think there was a bit of a shortage as the QVs were late to arrive in 1983 in the States, and it was documented that my 82 had been held back so that they would have some cars for car shows, etc). My 20 years of Maintenance has run just over $52,000 (an avg of 2600/year).

I recently bought a 1982 Mondial from the original owner. The original window sticker was $64,684.00. The sales contracy shows that he paid full sticker but no tax.

first Fcar i bought was a 1979 308GTB, # 29133, from a guy in Dallas. He included a copy of window sticker, and the list price was right at $40k.
Worth remembering that during the late 70s to mid 80s, inflation was RAMPANT, and the list price escalation on Fcars(the 8 cyl, at least, as the 12 cyl were grey market until the TR) was rather severe.
