I've been on-and-off considering one of these for a while, and in all honesty it's because I want to own a V12 and I need something with an automatic for the new commute. I've never been a concourse guy, and 'patina' has never bugged me.

So, what's a decent-mechanical but not #1 level 400A/400iA running for, real world selling prices?

    Thanks

I'd say it's subject to condition with 30k being perfect and 17k for one needing 13k worth of work. Most I've seen needed at least 5k to make them comfortably reliable. I'm thus in agreement with James which makes a 25k asking average worth a 22k bid. But keep 5k in the bank for incidentals.

After 3 years with my car it is now becoming "my" car and quite reliable. I keep improving it but I take only long trips with it and it always gets me home. (maybe with a short 'to do' list each long trip)

who knows. i purchased a one owner two years ago and have not done anything but drive. i even loaned it out for a month to a school teacher. there are no problems. total cost $14000. Today you may look for the same car in the 5-10 $ range. Watch Leake auction tomorrow. Five at no reserve

    1. These are rarer than a one-off from Maranello, &
    2. the converse are all over the place, &
    3. a 400 w/a decent powerplant 'will' be in decent overall shape.

Hagerty can give you the high & low they will insure these (depending on mileage & condition of course) as they watch the market & auctions.

Speaking of world, don't buy one from GB as they seem to be double in $$ as in the States.

Like yeah! Bigtime for a series 2 400i, yours is a 5 sp. right? That adds $7.5K to the mix.
I remember Dave got $45K agreed on his 5 sp. w/6k mi., yours, I believe, had 12K mi.?
Hagerty told me a year ago the bottom was around $13K, I would imagine they're worth more than that parting out.

Wow, that car was last advertised by an FChatter for sale in June 2007 with 50,000 miles and now it has 90,000 miles! Can't say that this one hasn't been driven! ScottB in Chico CA said that carfax in 2007 showed 79,000 miles and he thought it was Km, but probably not since the speedo shows mph. Apparently color change sometime from original black.

Pretty grotty, isn't it? Considering that the ad shows invoices that say that $11,000 has been spent on this car in the past year and a half, it sure doesn't look as though anyone has been in the engine compartment other than maybe some mice and squirrels.

But then you look at the invoices and see that not much has really been done for that $11K: front and rear brakes (pads only), radiator flush and repair, replace alternator pulley and belts, couple of oil changes, replace center exhaust sections (with used!) for $600 plus labor, one (that's one!) new tire. Seems a little rich to me and at least they could have cleaned up the engine compartment a bit.

I noticed the charge for 1 gal. of simple green, imagine what it looked like 'before',.... I wonder if any pix were provided when it was for sale in 2007?

I wouldn't read too much into that. A 400i with no history, no maintenance records, no marketing, limited abilty to inspect all translates into a huge unknown and therefore a huge risk. One or more of these cars could be very good, very bad or somewhere in between. The problem is that it is difficult to figure out which it is based on the limited information provided and a very bad car is not worth any money other than parts value.

Considering that a simple engine rebuild if needed will cost as much or more as a decent 400i auto, even getting a car full of unknowns for free could be a risky proposition, at least if you are not planning on parting it out.

Sometimes there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Ferrari.

i have three of those very expensive cars. one with a tendency to mix oil and water. i now know that was not an option from Ferrari.

In my humble opinion, the price has now reached the ground. I guess we all have in mind the value, some years ago, of a 330 gt with its unusual front part or of a 250 gte 2+2 that was considered as a basis to build a gto replica. These cars were said to be cheap, but likely to be expensive to maintain, exactly what is currently being said from our cars. I expect the 365GT4/400/412 to appreciate in the next years, like the 250gte and 330gt did some years ago. I keep mine! By the way, I've just bought a jaguar e-type, '65 series one. I wonder whether I am the only one to own both a 400 and an e-type.

I don't know of anyone who owns one of each but it does seem to make sense to use the Jaguar as your winter beater car! :D
