OK, I'm not a watch fanatic by any means, so please pardon my ignorance...

What other watches are available that have a second hand that sweeps smoothly like a Rolex or Tudor?

I have a WWII era Tudor that I bought years ago for three reasons: I loved the gliding second hand, the radium markings glowed so bright that I could see the time at night without glasses (typically wore it to bed), and it was inexpensive. Unfortunately, after 10 years or so of excellent service, it needs more than a typical service & I'd sure like to replace it on a VERY limited budget...

Don't replace it, have it serviced. No reason it can't run like new again.

Other than the fact that my sweat ate through the o-ring, steamed up the face, and stopped it in its tracks. One day I will have it serviced, but I only paid somewhere around $300 for it in the first place - servicing will be close to double that & my budget simply doesn't allow for it just now.

All non-quartz movement watches will have a sweep second hand. Good luck.

Yes and no. They will have a sweep second BUT Rolex is known for the smooth sweep. If you look at most any other watch you can tell that the second hand is moving in little jumps. In the Rolex it move very smoothly. This is one of the the easiest ways to tell a fake Rolex.

I don't know of any others that have a smooth sweep BUT I am not an expert by any far flung stretch of the imagination. Chris (VTC) posts a lot of nice watches at reasonable prices. I would check out his site and/or give him a call.

All mechanical watches provide the illusion of a smooth sweep, but the second hands are actually "jumping". My omega's second hand moves about 8 positions per second- rolexes may be finer, resulting in the illusion of smoother movement.

I've never seen one in action, but Seiko's "spring drive" watches supposedly have an infinitely smooth second hand based on how their movement works (not the same as a traditional mechanical movement). They're expensive, though.

As mentioned any watch that is "Automatic" meaning not Quartz will have a smooth sweeping second hand. Anything that is 21 Jewels or above will have a very smooth sweeping hand.
