I had my 360 smogged (in CA). They put in a wrong number odometer reading on the report which has been already been electronically filed. The reading was suppose to be 14,551 miles but they reported 122,909 miles. I didn't realize this until well after I got home. I called them and the supervisor said there is no way to go into the system and correct the information. The only thing they can do is resmog the car which will enter another file into the system with the correct mileage.

With millions of cars being smogged per year I'm sure this happened more then a few times. Is it really impossible to update an error?

My concern is that when it comes time to sell, I have to explain to a potential buyer that it was a clerical error and not an odometer rollback attempt.

I would guess that what they told you is absolutely true, if perhaps a bit lame.

At the very least, get the error acknowledged in writing from the smog station, for your records.

I would make them file a second report (their error, their expense) so that it gets corrected with the shortest time lag in databases, maybe have them sign a letter saying they made an error, keep copies of both reports with your car records. With the same station filing a second smog report with corrected mileage within 1 day and a letter explaining the error in the records, it should be acceptable.

I'll definitely bring it back to resmog it but I can't do it until next week. I will also try to get the Carfax and Autocheck report corrected also. Is there anything other suggestions?

I would hold them to the mistake and make them re-do the SMOG for free, or you will report them: CA frowns on such activity by stations, as well they should be frowned upon.

    report them

I would think this is some kind of finable offence or they could have their licensed pulled.

For sure, take it back and have it done again for free.

Lucky for you, it wasn't just a few thousand miles difference. No one on a Car Fax is going to believe you drove 100,000 miles on your Ferrari in the span of a year or so. So, if it did show up somewhere bizarre in the future, it's not going to be a black mark.

Good luck with this. I had this happen with one of my Ferraris. Instead of entering 1,200 miles, they entered 12,000. This was New York State and after many tries at getting it corrected I gave up and went to CARFAX where with proper documentation they were willing to correct it. Having the correct mileage in CARFAX was the most important to correct of the two IMO. When it came time to sell, the new owner to be pulled the CARFAX report and all was well.

+1, I agree that they should pay for the re-test.

Virginia DMV fixed such an error going the other way on one of my Jeeps in the past. It can be fixed, you just have not talked to the right person yet.
