I'm a HUGE fan of the World's fair. Those pictures are so amazing. Too bad it wasn't for real, but you look at those buildings and it blows anything in the Old World away. Hands down.

    Oh well.

Nice! I recently discovered tumblr...whatever the topic it seems there are endless vintage photos.

tumblr tip...You may already know this but I realized by adding "archive" to the end of the home page it takes you to a page that allows you to scroll thru without having to hit "next" or the like. Only drawback I've noticed is the pics are smaller but you can click to enlarge.

    for example: http://chicagopast.tumblr.com/archive

Wolf Point is back in the news with a 3 tower plan, one 525ft, one 650ft and one 900ft building. The Kennedy's still own this land on the north corner of the Chicago river where it splits in two going north and south. A very important piece of land for the Chicago skyline.

By the way, WTC might not end up being the tallest building in the US after all since the spire on it may now be considered an antenna. Unless they change the rules the Sears/Willis tower could stay tallest as it's top floor is higher than the WTC towers top floor.

Love this thread. I go to Chicago twice a year. Stay at 4 seasons love view looking up Michigan - it's my screen saver. very easy getting around, only miss marshal fields.

I don't understand why all these incredible buildings/projects get planned for Chicago. Why don't these get built in other cities? Too damn cold in the winter. ;)

They build most of the US skyscrapers up north in the "cold". Look at the size of downtown New York and Chicago compared to US warm cities.

Miami somewhat as they had a boom for condo's but NYC and CHI are still light years ahead in the USA. I think it will take 50 years for the southern US cities to catch up if they ever do. Houston is the closest, and they have less than half the skyscaper space Chicago has and 1/4 the space NYC does. It takes years to build and fill these great downtowns(Dubai has alot of big empty buildings and a small metro population but some nice trophy buildings).

Cool thread. McHugh Construction does a lot (one could say most) of these big projects. I know Jim McHugh. He's been friends with my parents for years and has some pretty cool stories to tell about these skyscraper projects. For years he had a helicopter and his own pilot to get him to work in the city every morning. He flew the thing himself and picked
my dad up once in our field to take him out to meet my mom and his wife at their place. They stopped at the airport for some gas and they were landing my dad had to yell out for them to "look out for the wires!" as he didn't see the cables and was going to fly them into them. Then when they were leaving they couldn't get much altitude after a few full throttle tries. Jim figured out he had the "brake" on and took it off after almost wrecking the copter the first few times. He was a better CEO than a pilot! ;-). Really nice guy though and I'm glad to see his name all over these projects carrying on the family legacy.

Nice pictures. That is the very cool looking Staybridge Suites Hotel with the all the fabric covers. They will restart construction on it next month.

    Huskerbill,

Mchugh does most of the big stuff along Bovis. They should start being very busy in Chicago by the end of 2012. Interesting story!!
