I read an interview of the architect on that project when it was completed; he said they chose the "space ship" look because there was no way to scale up Soldier field's greek columns without it looking ridiculous; so they went with an "ancient surrounded by modern" look. I like it, a cool solution and better than destroying a piece of history like Soldier Field (and keeping a major stadium in a downtown area, instead of moving it to a crappy neighborhood or the exurbs)
I like it also, but it did take it off the historical list as to much was removed. It also turned out to be a mistake when Chicago went for the Olympics as they downsized it so much. They would have had to build another large Olympic size stadium. One similar note, I wonder if the building faces from historical buildings will also be taken off the saved historical list if they tore down the backside of the building?? thanks for the pics, ive lived here all my life and have never seen those old photos,,the AON building was built the same way the twin WTC towers, its almost an perfect copy
AON was finished before the WTC towers. They want to tear down the Prentice Womens Hospital wing designed by the same architect that designed Marina Towers, Bertrand Goldberg. THIS SHOULD BE LANDMARKED or saved even if it is rather young. It is a classic!!! Tom Tanner/Ferrari Expo 2012-Chicago March 2012

A few more photos. Several new projects just started construction last month, but nothing over 500 ft. The Waterview has been bought and will be finished, with construction starting next year. It will loose several hundred feet of height under the redesign. Talk of developing Wolf Point with a office building complex has again started. We will see if anything happens http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd85/F1tommy/Chicago%202010/Chicago2011016.jpg http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd85/F1tommy/Chicago%202010/Chicago2011005.jpg http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd85/F1tommy/Chicago%202010/Chicago2011004.jpg Tom Tanner/Ferrari Expo 2012-Chicago March 2012

An update on the Waterview tower. A new design by the new owners Related Reality who bought the property a few months ago unfinished. The base I don't think works with the top, but it is a strange and clever design by DeStefano and Partners. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=185023&page=10 Tom Tanner/Ferrari Expo 2012-Chicago March 2012 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The new Abraj Al-Bait in Mecca is unreal. U-N-R-E-A-L! ! ! ! ! http://www.al-madina.com/files/0.16.jpg Would love to see it in person. It dwarfs everything else in comparison.
Its big alright, but I don't really like it very much. Plus its very hard to go see it unless your their religion. Back to Chicago skyscrapers. Tom Tanner/Ferrari Expo 2012-Chicago March 2012
Construction is starting to wind up again in downtown Chicago with several new towers announced this week, with funding in place: Pair of downtown apartment builders get funds to join crowded field By: Alby Gallun November 16, 2011 Crain's) — Two more apartment developers have scored financing for downtown high-rises — one in Streeterville and one in River North — adding 775 more units to a construction wave that will test the rental market about two years from now. A joint venture led by Optima Inc. is getting ready to break ground on a 42-story, 325-unit apartment tower at the northeast corner of Illinois and St. Clair streets after securing a construction loan from PNC Financial Services Group Inc. and HSBC Holdings PLC, says David Hovey, founder and president of the Glencoe-based developer. Optima, which is building the high-rise in a joint venture with Tampa-based DeBartolo Development LLC, is also financing the project with a preferred equity investment from LaSalle Investment Management, a unit of Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle Inc., he says. He declines to disclose the amount of financing or cost of the project. In River North, Habitat Co. has lined up financing from Bentall Kennedy L.P., a Seattle-based pension-fund adviser, for a 450-unit building at 360 W. Hubbard St. Bentall Kennedy Executive Vice-president Bob Ratliffe says the financing will be structured as equity, not debt, but declines to provide details, saying the transaction had not yet closed. Apartment development has taken off downtown this year, spurred by rising occupancies and rents. Seven downtown projects are already under way, and consulting firm Appraisal Research Counselors estimates that developers will add 5,600 new apartments to the downtown market by the end of 2014. Here are a few more pictures from just south of the loop taken today. Old and new mixed together, and a new park. The Roosevelt University building is now almost done(Blue building to right on picture 1 next to red CNA building). It's been to nice out the grass is partly green. This angle is strange as it always shows the John Hancock as being very short since its alot farther north.
