I think it is one of the nicest places on Earth to live in. But then again I'm biased. :)

    Those are some sweet buildings.

OT but how much does it cost to live in Chicago? I did a little research about moving there and I found condos from around 1600/month.

How does the parking garage work at the Marina towers? I don't see the levels angled so you drive around in circles to get to the top (it is like that closer to the bottom where parallel parking is). Is there a car elevator? Why are all the cars backed into their spots? Any pictures of the interior of it? I like garages. :)

I love this thread! I still call Chicago home despite being sucked out 4 years ago and sent to Dallas. Some day, I'll be back, at least closer, I hope.

    Great pictures everyone.

SHHHHHH, don't let the native Texans hear you. They get a little emotional when you say bad things about their "places of worship".

Right. IMHO Texas has a lot to offer, but the architecture of Dallas isn't one of its greatest assets. Dallas does however have a few beautiful art museums. The one with the outdoor sculpture garden is my favorite. And I take a Dallas winter anytime over a Chicago winter.

Anyway, as hard as I tried, I was never able to locate the "Oil Barons' Club". ;)

They keep building here even with the downturn.
The Waterview might start up again in a month or two.
Trump and 300 N are topped out. Legacy is growing like a tree
as is BCBS and Aqua. Several new office buildings are being planned.
Lets not forget about the Chicago Spire. They say it should start
    going above ground next year.
I would take a Chicago summer over a Dallass summer anytime!!

I'd take a Chicago WINTER over a Dallas Summer! Most people think I'm crazy, but that's one of the biggest things I miss about Chicago and the Midwest in general.... The seasons. Down here fall and spring barely exist, summer is BRUTAL, and winter is boring. I've always loved the fall for the color changes, winter for the snow and crisp air, and spring for the anticipation of what you know Summer brings.

Taken about 2 weeks ago. You can see Trump, 300N, Legacy, and BCBC on the very edge
all under construction. The Aqua is also coming up behind BCBS.(to the right just off the photo)
When the credit market gets back on track Waterview should start rising again.

It was shot with a 5D, but I don't remember what kind of lens he was using at the time. He has a ton of other Chicago photos up on his myspace page, including a higher resolution copy of the shot I posted in this thread, and technical details for many of the shots. He's very talented, as you'll notice from his work.

Here's a direct link to a recent batch of Chicago photos he posted:

You can find a lot more of his work by browsing back to his main profile.

He does very nice work. I like how he changes the colors. It almost looks
    look like a different city.

Whoa, never saw/heard about that before. IMO I don't really think it fits the urban skyline, probably would fit somewhere like Dubai, but it looks really cool.

Whoops, I missed the 2nd and 3rd page, but I guess it is changing rapidly, so it probably will fit in pretty nicely. I also want to know why in the parking garage all the cars are parked backwards.

Here are a few very old Chicago color photo's from the National Archive. They are available for public use! Photos are shot with Kodak color film as usual. Most date back to 1943 with one from 1951 and one from the early 1960's. They have hundreds of very old color photos of both Chicago and New York on record. I can post more if you like them. The city really looks dirty
compaired to now due to the coal burning steam engines that ran into downtown Chicago in huge numbers daily(at the time largest rail hub in the world).

    Enjoy.

A few more taken during World War II. Also an airborne photo from 1938. Chicago
had alot of trains going downtown. The entire lakefront from Michigan avenue to the shoreline was landfill put in by the railroads during the 1800's and early 1900's.
Looking at some of the buildings that have been torn down in Chicago over the years can make a historian sick. Many were torn down to make way for surface lots!!!

One more. Its amazing how much the Wrigley building stood out back them. Now you can barely see it unless you are on the east branch of the Chicago river!

I grew up in Chicago and was relocated to Dallas at the age of 10 when my Dad transferred with Club Corp (CCA at the time). That was a long time ago. I enjoy both cities for very differernt reasons and would love to have a house in Dallas and an apartment in Chicago overlooking the lake.

My uncle sent this video to me earlier this week of Chicago in 1948. It is worth a look.
