But, an indicated 150 in an XKE in 1968 on I-94 near Ann Arbor (with the top down, real smart!), indicated 126 in an '84 Turbocoupe, indicated 132 in a Mustang SVO, indicated 142 in my 308 near Cheyenne WY on I-25, calculated 150-ish at Road America several times in the Brabham BT-38. Quite a thrill with your butt about 4 inches from the track...the open road speeds were done when the highways in question were virtually empty of innocents who could have been adversely affected by my stupidity!
I hit one 420 yards once. Rolled all the way down hill on the cartpath after going 160 yards in the air. On in two, 4 put for bogey... And yes, I have driven over 122!
1979 Daytona Speedway: 158 (Ducati bevel Drive), 1989 Daytona Speedway 163 (Ducati/Harris), 2005 Reno to Las Vegas 165, average 130 mph, Ferrari 360. However, March 1989: 150 mph, no bike, sliding on the ground, Daytona Speedway, last lap, fell in the kink before the banking. Lastly, Daytona Speedway October 2007, 170+ on a Suzuki GSXR Formula Extreme bike (only did one lap at speed, finally realized I'd gotten too old that that ****). Art
Asking 122 mph on ferrarichat seems to me useless.....In my case 290 km/hour on normal higway and dont think its something special....
I agree Petr, but don't forget that the question is primarily directed at American FChatters. European highways are safer than those in the US because, as someone else said, there is a huge difference in driving culture. I hit the 300+ km/h mark in many European countries but I'd never ever do that in the States. (no offense meant )
My stock 1985 Saab 900 Turbo 16v doesn't seem to be able to go any faster then 125mph. A speed which I've done a few times and it is surprisingly solid at that speed.
Sure....my street Miata (at the time).....my BMW 540i 6-speed........my Corrado VR6 (back in 1995)......and a Passat TDI 5-speed rental car on zee awe-tow-bahn last year.
Even a stock MR2 Turbo could do 140. The MR2 is a quite capable platform. http://www.mr2ownersclub.com/mr2records/landspeed.htm 3sgte Power primer: http://www.mrcontrols.com/primers/power.htm
122? Is there any decent family car that doesnt manage 122mph ? Probably not, but on the other hand, that doesnt mean that everybody drives like that. But as so many other boys in the world I do it occasionally. Its fun and gives a thrill even if its illegal, but about 150mph or 240kmh with my SAAB. And that in a pretty decent time.
Oh yeah, all the time on the CBR & other bikes (track & street); few times in the MR2. Only periodically now - no longer have the CBR; MR2 is in great shape but 17 yo.
Don't go there that often as highways are not that exciting, but....myself behind the wheel, on the dial: 205 km/h (128mph): 1989 Lancia Delta Integrale (not mine) in 1996. Car was very stable. 210 km/h (130mph): 1988 Ferrari 328 GTS (not mine) in 2000. Car was feeling well at home. 222 km/h (138mph): 1982 Alfa GTV6 in 1999 (mine) - maxed out. Car was very dicey, bouncing around a lot. 224 km/h (139mph): 1998 Alfa 156 2.0TS (mine) in 2001 - maxed out. Car felt OK. 260 km/h (162mph): 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello (mine) in 2007. Car was barely awake. . The GPS reading at the time was 245 km/h which I know to be very accurate. All these were done without overtaking anyone, on a straight road. What I have noticed, though, is that with the 550 getting to 125mph in only 14.5 seconds from rest, I do spend a lot of time there when driving in Germany on unrestricted roads, when traffic and weather allow. Onno
I took my '00 TransAm WS6 up to 145 with a Honda boy in the passenger seat. He didn't call it a "meathead sled" after that..............
