Front shock absorber started leaking on my car - has anyone rebuilt their shocks recently and what's the going rate these days?

My local independent replaced both rear leaking shocks at $3536 each plus approx $600 labor each. I replaced both left and right at the same time. They reused all other components and dialed in the suspension when complete. Not a cheap fix but necessary to have a great car and remain safe. Image Unavailable, Please Login

If you search multiple guys have mentioned places in Europe that rebuild them for a fraction of the cost of buying new Ferrari shocks but of course that would leave your car on jack stands for however long, the ones I have seen have pricing on their site. There is also rebuild master tech here in the US but I'm still confused as to if they actually rebuild shocks. Alternatively you could find some used or blown shocks on eBay and send those to be rebuilt then resell yours to recoup the cost. Also someone a few threads down mentioned some cheapo shocks they have used that they haven't had any issues with....could also use those temporarily.

Or get your head kicked in buying new Ferrari shocks like I did on my Cali before it was totaled out, 11k for all four and apparently that was a really good deal.

I spoke to rebuild master about rebuilding the rear shocks on my 458. They told me they rebuild front ones but told me I could send the rear ones in for R & D and maybe they can rebuild them .

Interesting, sounds like they just never got their hands on the rears before. You going to send them in?

Nagengast in Poland have been rebuilding these shocks for a good few years now, and although I haven't had cause to use them personally, they seem to get good reviews. They will also send you rebuilt ones to fit before you need to return your old ones so the car is not laid up.

spoke to these guys, they want EUR800+shipping for each shock rebuilt. Better than buying new shocks from Ferrari, but I've found another place which is supposed to be cheaper, will report back once I speak to them

    The Magnaride shocks are durable
The 458 made in 2010 to 2014 were assembled with parts a few years older at the start
Ever look at your manufacture date of your Elder coil packs which came with the car from the factory

not a bad idea to swap out the coils, a friend did on his 360 and says the difference in performance is noticeable

Their website says they don't do core exchange on our shocks (I see they do core exchanges on Audi R8's) and that they will only do the refresh on the shocks we send, leaving our cars up on jackstands or taking up a shop's lift for a few weeks.

Looks like they don't do an exchange program for the 458 shocks so we'd still have to send ours in and have car sitting on a lift

Paid 11k on my Cali from the dealer and apparently that was a great deal....then a week later lost her on a fire.

11k was a "winter special" out the door, it wasn't exactly as planned and if I could do it all over again I would have bought some blown shocks on ebay or wherever, sent those to be rebuilt and then sold off my old shocks for the same purpose or the other way around.

23k miles and yea insurance actually paid me quite a bit more than what I could have realistically sold her for, even considering the 10k haircut. I actually was looking to sell and really dreading the process so it worked out. Now shopping for a 458...

I sent my rears in last month so they may have them rebuilt already and on the shelf. My suggestion is to email Raf and ask. They are also actively buying used shocks in order to have some on the shelf.

I too owned a California. And I seem to recall that the Magnaride shock was a paid option upgrade. So I suppose there might be a backward path to a non Magnaride shock, the factory standard shock. I’m sure that you’d have to pay for the software change to get rid of the shock warning and to activate the standard system which I’m sure would have two setting to choose from. Soft and firm which is what the other F cars used such as 360 and 430

Have fun and good luck on your 458 journey. I’ve been a big fan of the 58

(Selling a used F car which has over a few thousand miles can be a humbling experience. The insurance may have been a gift and you may not have been able to get the 10 K you thought you lost)

Yea I considered going to standard shocks and ditching the Magnaride but because I wanted to sell I thought it would be best for resale value and potential trade to a dealer to keep everything OEM. Obviously didn't know she would be gone a week later haha....she drove pretty nice for those few days though!

Selling a Ferrari in Michigan with a declining value....yea the insurance was definitely a gift. The fact that there were no comparables in the area actually helped a lot with the valuation and I took it to an adjuster for more, ended up with 117k total....

No no the poor girl didn't do anything wrong, she was just parked in the wrong place at the wrong time. The first 75 degree day here in Michigan and I drove her to work, she was parked out front when the fire started. Got to enjoy her with the top down one last time. Again it didn't end up being a bad thing but I had just got her dialed in wish I had a little more time with her, carbon cleaning done, new injectors and shocks....she felt like a completely different car.....for that one day. I know I'm shopping for a 458 now but it's not because the Cali was bad she was really special once I got her all sorted I think most of the ones people drive and base their opinion on haven't been cared for properly because people thought they were buying the "cheap" Ferrari and treated it as such. The carbon cleaning and injectors transformed her into a completely different animal, I did get to enjoy that part of it for a few weeks last fall. I'm just going for a difference experience now that I got my first exotic under my belt. Seeing all the drastic price drops on Cali's is enticing nonetheless....I fully believe that won't last long once people start to realize how special one of the last N/A V8's is especially with the hardtop convertible....didn't know I wanted a convertible until I owned one and now I have to have one but I won't do a soft top in Michigan.
