When my QV is hot, it sometimes does not "like" going into reverse. You can feel the gears try to crunch. A solution where it is always smooth going into reverse: Go into 1st the Push the lever down while in 1st and go up into Reverse Another alternative is to go forward just a bit and then it goes into reverse fine. The experts believe the pilot bearing may be binding, not allowing the engine and input shaft to be independent of one another with the clutch released. The clutch is fine so i will keep watching this before i move forward with a full transmission service to replace the clutch/TO bearing/pilot bearings etc.
Same does my 1979 gts, and i do the same trick, 1st gear first. I thing is a typical behavior of 30+ gear boxes
The last Ferrari gear box without a synchronized reverse. I forget sometimes driving ours. On the TR I can select reverse while still going forward. 1st then reverse is never a bad idea.
When I first got my 308, it did not take long to notice that it was too doing this when warm, . . . until thanks to FChat (Steve Magnussen) I learned the first then reverse trick, which I've done ever since and have spared myself and the car that horrible clunk
When I first got my Mondial 3.2, I experienced the ominous "clunk" every time I engaged Reverse from Neutral. Could not for the life of me understand why that was happening. This being my first Ferrari, I was understandably concerned for the well-being of my gearbox. So I asked some folks about it and their response was the same as discussed here go from neutral to 1st, press down on the ball and slide it smoothly into Reverse. My reaction was, what is this? The secret Ferrari handshake? Well, ever since then, I've done it just that way, and never a clunk in Reverse since. Now engaging second gear when cold that's a different story! LOL
If I get any resistance going into reverse, I do the same thing. Don't even think about it, straight habit.
Your mechanic can also adjust the 'travel' on the clutch to fix this, it will go into reverse from neutral when car is warmed up without the clunk or at least it will become much less and be adjusted more until fully smooth. I had this done on my 89, it used to behave the same way...
Are there any tricks for getting into first gear after the car is warm? Mine has no problems with any gear, including second, when cold. After about 5 minutes, I can't get into first any longer, though I haven't tried doing so from other than reverse, neutral, or second. Ciao! Hannibal
All these posts seem to me to call for a shift alignment adjustment. With a search you can find many posts here about the procedure. I can also post my document with the procedure. The "pros" can do it without dropping the gearbox pan. I cannot.
On occaison I have a slight balk going into reverse but since it glides into second even when dead cold no one's going to touch my linkage.
