so day, inadvertently, I did not shift until 9000rpm, it was just a split second before I shifted...car was fine...I am going to try avoiding this in the future...but can you damage the engine if you just shift one or two times in the red on these cars...and besides the engine immediately malfunctioning or a gasket leaking or something, could it cause internal damage that would only be realized later in the life of the car? Thanks...

I've had my share of doing that a few times with my 360 Spider and GT3. Haven't had any problems so far. Would be interested in hearing from the experts what could go wrong if any; hopefully nothing.

Scott- There is a fuel cut-off for the engine to protect it, so about the only way to hurt one of them is to downshift (3 pedal car) and mechanically over-rev the engine. The F1 system will not even let you do that. Bouncing it off the redline occasionally will not hurt it. Have done it several times on my car.

Remember the old Can-Am days, where they used a soft engine cut-off to shift up through the gears. Accelerate until she pauses, and then upshift. Shifts came pretty fast.

Terry, thanks as always...it was really by mistake...taking my buddy for a ride in the car for the first time, and was showing him a little performance action, and it got to 9000 so freakin quick!

If it can't hit/run at redline it won't be a Ferrari engine! The engine is always the most robust part of any f-car.

Very true, its seems its not the engines that break, its the interior bit, electroics, etc...

Ferrari brakes in at the factory each F430 engine and make them running at >10.000 rpm during 2 hours...So no risks for your engine if all maintenance is done as it should be ;)

Drive it like you stole it! **After it is at operational temperature. If they did not want you to redline the vehicle, they would have lowered the redline. Please also note that peak HP is not always at redline.

-I redline my Porsche every time I drive it.

-I dont always redline my F430, but only because redline in any gear but first is usually violating state laws regarding the distance a vehicle travels divided by the time it takes to travel said distance. Its really quite a complex law clearly created by people without Ferraris.

-I rarely get to redline my Yamaha YZFR1 because even in 1st gear thats 99 mph, and the shortest 4 seconds of your life.

-I do not redline my wife's C320 Mercedes.
-Redlining rental cars is a hobby, but they usually sound like they are about to explode or implode. I use Hertz, so dont buy used Hertz rental cars :)

You'll be fine- the fuel cut off is a couple of hundred rpm above the redline (I think 8,700 or thereabouts on a 360)- there could be slight error in the tach that overshot up to 9,000, but either way it's OK and was just for a quick moment. Only way to over rev is downshifting in a stick car into a gear that would bring the motor up to a too high RPM- AKA "the money shift" :)

On another note, as long as your oil is fully up to operating temperature, you should be OK to redline the car.

That's probably what happened. The 430 is redlined and limited to 8,500 rpm, according to the manual. Just like speedometers, tachs can also be optimistic. Just ask Yamaha about their 17,500 redline on their first R6s when engine was actually limited to 16,200. Oops.

I track mine and run it to the red all the time. No problem at all. The software does not allow you to over rev the engine and that's why you'll notice it cuts off if you reach certain point. Make sure the engine is warmed up and fluids gets changed regularly.

I agree with the others: This is what the car was designed to do so don't worry about it. What you did is not abuse.

But, you learned an even more valuable lesson: don't worry about it so much and drive it like crazy. That's why they build them like they do.

The only caveats are: do it safely only and only when the car is within normal operating temperatures.

I was driving on the highway and had to go around a car down shifted to 3rd and hit the gas. I must-have hit the RPM sweet spot and went a bit crazy my 360 shifted to a 4th gear for me. Have you guys had anything like that happened to you before?

Marcin: the 360 will upshift for you automatically at redline, unless you have it in sport mode. Then it will not. It took me by surprise the first time that happened!

I join in with those here who believe you really cannot harm your 360 bouncing off the red line occasionally. The cut outs are there to protect the engine
The one caveat is I always make sure the oil temp is up to the minimum 140Degrees BEFORE any aggressive driving and shifting. Under that temp range I won't take my 360 over 4K RPM

Nothing better than the sound of a Ferrari 360 at redline. :)
