Over the years I've seen references to "SEM" trim paint. I tried some searches but found nothing specific. Is this paint especialy appropriate for touching up engine compartments, chassis, etc. If so, why? is it the best color match, durability or.....? I seem to recall some horror stories in which repainting caused the original paint to lift up from the surfaces. Just wondering if SEM is considered the way to go.

    Thoughts?

    Hi Steve,

I like SEM. Used it many times. Good durable stuff. SEM Trim Black is low luster and perfect for trim and many other parts. Other SEM products are great too.

Be prepared to prep surfaced as instructed on can. Might include scuff, surface cleaner, adhesion promoter, etc. depending on surface. Works really well when you follow directions.

    Can be purchased on Amazon.

Very good product. Label directions say it can be applied without a primer, but you must follow directions. It is perfect match for the black on the rocker panels, fiberglass tub under the car, wheel wells and front, spare tire compartment. Dries fairly quick. Can be brushed on or sprayed without thinning. Lacquer based, so get some lacquer thinner for cleanup.

I get mine at a store that sells wholesale body work and paint supplies to autobody shops.

SEM seems to be the #1 choice, including professionals. They were recommended to me a number of years ago by an upholstery guy. I've tried other brands, but SEM seems to have the best finish and durability. They are more expensive than others, but I feel that they're definitely worth it!

However, I can only speak about their upholstery paint since that's the only product I've used from them over the years.

Highly recommend. I used it to paint euro style fibreglass bumpers and it is as close as one can get to a factory black trim paint. Many light coats versus 1 or 2 heavy.

I also like MarHyde for trim black.
