I have a 1981 308 GTBi. My Seat Belt light turns on when I start the car and then goes off about 15 seconds later. It will also occasionally light up when I am driving, even though my seat belt is buckled.

I am trying to troubleshoot this item and need to know what it does when its working correctly.

When all is well, does the seat belt light turn on for a few seconds when the car is started?

My seat belt light comes on when I start my car with the belt unbuckled. It goes off about 10 seconds later. If I fasten my seatbelt before i satrt the car, the light does not come on.

Check the wires to your belts and spray the connections with Wurth Contact OL Electrical Cleaner and see if that helps.

It should (regardless of whether the Driver's seatbelt is fastened or not) -- see the "Note" on page 33 in your 216/81 OM.

Well, Steve, I guess I'll have to look closer next time. ;)

I've had some connector issues which responded well to Wurth's contact cleaner, eg the door jamb interior light switches and key-in-ignition buzzer switch. The only disconnected wire is the seat pressure switch to cut off the fuel pump.

Your '76 may be different (or molested if the buzzer is disabled ;)) -- what does your OM say?

Steve, I have the OM at home. I'll check it tonight. I'll also check operation of the seat belt light.

Here is the circuit to help you re-establish operation. There are several items under the dash which get ripped out or modified by irritated owners. Actually simple removal of the seat belt relay (panel-2nd row left) or one wire to the buzzer will suffice to silence it. An intermittent light can be an flaky seat belt switch or bimetal strip in the timer. I'd suggest shorting together the connector under the back of the driver seat.

The circuit is from the package and I've recently posted the 1981 drawing. I was surprised at the differences of the 1981 is from the 1980.

    Steve,

Indeed, the seat belt warning light comes on when I start my car whether or not my seat belt is fastened. It goes of about 5 seconds later. The buzzer sounds only when the seat belt is unfastened. The buzzer shuts off with the warning light.

My OM states this on page 33 as well.

Thanks for checking Barry -- your system seems to be working perfectly (but not your memory ;))

    :D

It's not what you think, Steve. It's just that the 308, 550 and 951 seat belt warning systems do different things.

My warning light illumination does not seem to have any connection to the fact that my seat belt is buckled or not. I think it has been disconnected and the wire is being grounded (shorted?) to something periodically.

I'm going to have to dig around and figure out where it is disconnected.

I finally got around to searching for the problem:

Putting a Birdman Fusebox did not fix the problem. (Although it did help several other issues. Thanks Birdman.)

The real problem was a poor solder joint on the Fasten Belt Device that is under the dashboard close to the steering column.

The Italians did not do any sort of strain relief on the wire going into the box, and the solder joint at the circuit board just failed.

10 minutes later, cooling soldering iron in hand, the problem was resolved.

Yes, I know I could have just unplugged the module, but what satisfaction would that give? :)
