http://www.agi.it/engsport/news/200901131823-spr-ren0058-art.html AGI/ITALPRESS) - Berlin, 13 Jan. - "Suddenly my heartbeat dropped, my heart stopped beating and everything went black", says 7 time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher during an interview that will be aired tonight on german television channel ZDF. He is talking about a behind the scenes to his brutal accident in Silverstone during the 1999 British GP when he broke his right leg in two places. "At the time I thought that I was experiencing the moment before death. I have no idea how for long I was out, or if I simply fainted or was in shock. All I know is that my heart stopped beating. At least that is what I felt". Michael Schumacher then moved on to a winning streak, becoming the undisputed leader from 200 to 2004 on his Ferrari. He now denies any second thoughts about racing again: "I did it for 16 years but then I suddenly lost the motivation that made me do it".
I saw the pictures of his mansion, but the other buildings on the site are..... crazy Image Unavailable, Please Login
No, that's a very rare White Arrow Fly. Never been caught on film before...until now. Wow...the insect community will be going crazy over this!!
With all due respect Jim, I don't think Schumacher thought that you would die in Silverstone in 1999 as the thread title implies.
I'm watching Sat TV on my computer. ZDF has some of their shows online, I'll have a look in a few days and tell you! The "I was going to die!!!" was extremly exaggerated (as usual when BILD reports something). Schumacher said he was calm after the crash and especially when he was finally out of the car. When he lay there he passed out, but shortly before, he couldn't hear his heart beating anymore (presumably due to the shock or already beginning to pass out). That's all about it... As a whole, a very interesting and very personal interview. Hopefully there will be a online version with subtitles for you guys soon...
Just shows how far Formula One safety has come, today somebody could probably walk away from an accident like that with no major injuries. His accident was very similar to Heikki's crash in Spain and Heikki suffered very little damage.
Crashing head-on into a barrier with brake problems? Not likely. I can't believe Schumi was alright {kind of} after sliding sideways into a barrier a couplr of years ago at like 145 mph {Interlagos???} He laid down beside the car when he got out but raced two days later.
Speed of impact and angle where more or less the same. How is so much different as you seem to imply? 10 years of safety development has saved atleast half a dozen F1 drivers in that period. Most important in my opinion is the HANS device. Simple in design yet very effective.
Robert Kubica had a pretty nasty head on crash in Montreal, at over 150 mph, I believe. he got lucky, but it was also because the car did it's job in absorbing all the energy.
I remember watching that crash and thinking that he was dead. Absolutely amazing what these cars can do.
IMHO, I just thank the great lord he is here with us right now. Regardless of how many championships he won after, I am just happy that Michael is alive and well, that is only what counts. I wish Ayrton Senna did not die on the sad day of May 1st 1994 as well. God Bless Michael and his family for he is a good man and probably the best driver that ever lived in my life time.
I have a small piece of the car he crashed at Silverstone. It is about an inch square and is black carbon fibre with a few specks of red. I obviously have no prof that it's real so it has no value to anyone except me. I have put it in a little frame and I intend displaying it in my shed when I have finished building my slot car track there. I'd love to see more screen-shots from the programme if anyone has any.
The angle wasn't even close. MS hit at nearly head-on and HK hit at about 45 degrees. When crashing at speed, the two are like night and day. Look at the MS vid at 1:38 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEprVaGKKMc, then look at the HK vid at 0:22 sec http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=k-WqBK3lBLA and see the difference. Also MS crashed into 3 layers of tires before hitting the barrier, HK had 2 extra sets of tires lining the wall, another massive difference. The speed for MS before he hit the brakes was 190 mph, with the rear brakes inoperable due to failure I don't know how much speed he scrubbed off on the road before he went through the gravel trap. HK's speed at impact was 145 mph so let's assume the speeds were close. I would rather be in HK's crash any day compared to MS's crash. Have you ever seen a NASCAR spin towards the inside wall through the infield? They try to take it on the side, rather than head-on so they can spin and bounce off. If they take it head-on or in the rear the car has more damage, more G-forces and more likelihood for injury.
That is why reading the online document is so important, if you diid you would realize that I did not write it and it is the sole opinion of the author. It was placed so others can enjoy the document. now watch me get banned.
