Thought it was time to give something back so here goes! The seats on my 02 360 are flawless...no wear at all! As we all know, our seat bolsters are the first to go on our seats. I came up with a clever way to protect your seat bolsters, hide current seat bolster wear and keep your seats looking like new! Take a look at the below photos. I went to Target and purchased a ladies XXL workout top. It fits over the seats as a perfect seat cover! It is made of spandex and fits perfectly! Should protect my seat bolsters forever! Below are the tags in case you want to pick a set of these up. They are made by Champion and are in the ladies workout clothing section. Best part it they slip on/off in about two seconds. Perfect if you want to take them off if you go to a car show, mechanic, before a workout, etc. Great seat protection for $25 a set! Great idea, but I couldn't do it! My friends would be like what's this t-shirt thing doing in your Ferrari???
Is the idea as good as the picture? Maybe, but who am I to say. Maybe if it was a Ladies "small" instead of "XXL" But seriously, why doesn't 3M make a clear bolster protector that feels like leather yet is clear and lets the leather breath. Then we might just talk! FYI; I take extra care on ingress not to use the bolster as a bumper car. Recently I spotted some guy at Starbucks climbing out of his car butt first. I waited 15min until he returned to his car, and as expected he got in feet first! Maybe this is a bolster extension program? (it was a honda whatever)
Hmmmm......The one stretched over the passenger seat looks ok, albeit a little flat chested. The driver's seat needs a white wife beater as a cover. As seen on peopleofwalmart.com pages...
I guess the idea makes sense but I just couldn't get over the idea or look of having a chick tank top on my Ferarri. Kinda reminds me of the plastic covers over a sofa. My drivers side seat bolster had heavy wear and the piping was torn. My mechanic removed the seat and had his upholsterer repair the piping and bolster and now it looks like new. Cost was about $450.
Agreed the bolster wear is a pain...but if you take some effort you can actually get into the car without even touching the thing...but you've got to make an effort.
+1 = WORTH IT. I do this on my Mercedes and my BMW anyway. The BMW has a piping run down the leading edge of the seat back. The Mercedes has a nice double-stitched seam. Those cars are pretty new, and through some care and maintenance, the seats look untouched. Don't know I'd go to the extent of stretching a tee shirt over my Ferrari seat (when I get one), but who knows. If it becomes a problem, maybe. If I exercise care and caution (NOT saying the OP does not do this), then it probably won't matter. And, I won't have to laugh at myself and curse a little bit every time I sit down in the F-car... Still, a very inventive solution to a common problem!
Can anyone recommend a good leather reconditioner for moderate wear? Is Leatherique the goto solution?
The problem is all leather in the Ferrari has a paint over it which holds the color. The piping is all vinyl. Leatherique, or any of the other produects, will not soak into the leather. It just sits on top until it either evaporates or you wipe it off with yoour cloths while getting in and out. I am not sure leather products do anything for leather that has a color coating over it. Want proof, go put a drop of water on your seats or dash. It just sits there. It doesn't soak into the leather.
True, but if your leather is a bit worn, the leatherique will get absorbed in the cracks in the coating and also along the stiching. In worn seats, I think it helps.
Seriously? Do you have a plastic cover on your couch too? I just can't get behind this one. Why make your car look like a ratted out Honda civic? I am for driving it and getting the seats redone when needed.
As long as you're not putting in the XXL ladies in the seat along with the shirt, I think it's a good idea
On my F430 (2006 Spider with Cuoio color) the leatherique rejuvenator soaks in quite well, yes it leaves a sticky-ness that the Leatherique cleaner, cleans up, but after it is noticeable softer and supple. *My 430 has no piping. Have you tried their Rejuvenator and had a bad experience, or is this speculation? Leather needs to breath or it will dry up, if it breaths it can absorb the oil. Yes it takes a long time and heat needs to be added in some cases (per directions), but it has worked on every car I have owned in the last 10 or so years since I discovered the rejuvenator. I will note that if you have a some fancy light colored stitching be careful to test a hidden area to make sure the oil and cleaner dont discolor, deteriorate, or make the leather bleed on the sticking.
This does suggest that there is a market for a product that would fit over the vulnerable upper bolsters but be reasonably attractive (ahem). Maybe color coordinated to the most popular interior colors -- nero, rosso,...
I'm not crazy about this idea, unless you constantly take them off and on. It doesn't look very good. On the other hand, my wife and I often sit on tan colored towels especially when going to the beach and on hot days with the top down. THey protect the seats a bit, absorb sweat, and are easily stowed away.
Exactly...the only time I am going to use them is when I am sweaty, going for a long drive, etc. While they don't look so good, they come right off and should protect my side bolsters very well!
x2 just get the bolsters upholstered if /when needed. Putting a wife beater on ur seats to protect them kind of defeats the purpose of having nice coachwork. IMO the best thing you can do to keep your car looking great is to get it professional detailed at your house 1x per month-- well worth it.
Btw Rob what exactly were you doing in the ladies XXL department? Is there something else you want to post? Actually I kinda like it and the black wb tee would not be noticable on my black seats. I still want to know whether you frequent this clothes section and for whom?
