Hi all, I just got my 2010 red cali yesterday. Very excited and happy!!! In the meantime, need some advice from experienced drivers here.

I tried the onboard satnav yesterday and found it not very user-friendly. For example, on my tomtom, it shows the live traffic ahead and provides the option of the quickest route to destination. And it warns you the SPEED camera ahead of you. Having dig in the manual, I haven't seen the option of those functions. Did I miss them or it doesn't come with it?

Another topic, anyone can advise me how to turn off the parking sensor?

    Many thanks in advance.

First of all congratulations on your purchase! Don't forget to post some pics....

As for the Navi...I honestly don't believe any (or almost any) manufacturer Navi is as good as the portable ones like Tom Tom and Garmin. The California one is decent although not very user friendly especially if you want to go through the menus.
Anyway, regarding your specific points, you get a live traffic update on the Navi as well and it will change the route based on that. If I remember right, if you press "menu" there is a button on the left that says TMC and that's the traffic updates. The default route is the faster one. The TMC is barely decent in the UK (if that).
Nothing related to speed cameras unfortunately in our Navi.
Based on all this i have started to use more and more my phone to navigate especially if i am worried of speed cameras and mostly use Waze and or Trapster. I have my phone attached to the vent with one of these: Tetrax XWAY Air Vent iPhone / iPod / Mobile: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Last but not least, you can turn the parking sensors off (unless you reverse) by going through the menu located behind the steering wheel next to the tft display. I can't find it in the manual but if you can't find it either let me know and I will let you know a step by step after I check tonight.

Never really understood a sat nav in a car Ferrari or Lambo. Maybe in an FF but otherwise?
Unless the owners forgot the route from the garage to the road.

Modern Ferrari's can travel further than two miles a month :D. They actually can be driven to a restaurant or Walmart. Why own it if you don't drive it everywhere? Taking your Cali a few hundred miles is WAY more fun than taking (your) Prius :D

Use my Nav to find out how long it will take to get home...sometimes.

Not as friendly as my Garmin.

Yeah the interface to enter a destination is questionable but I do like that the turn by turn shows up on the console behind the steering wheel.

The best SatNav I have used is the one in the new BMWs,interface is simple and I love that it shows all the lanes and tells you which lanes you can be in to pull off. Along with the actual exit sign image over the off ramp.

Just got back from a seven hour round tripper in the Cali. Wife and I had the top down, music blaring, sun in our face- it was awesome! I have a 2012 with 9000 on the odo- I drive her every chance I get- what's the point otherwise? I sure didn't buy it as an investment!

Yeah, the screen on the SatNav is like Windows version 1.0 - i.e. just awful, but the processor handles screen inputs pretty quickly. While it does show traffic in a very crude way I hate how it often has the road names just off the screen so you see lines showing the roads but no street names. How that made it through QA I have no bloody idea. It's a flawed clumsy system made by "teenagers who probably don't drive" but IMO it's better than not having a built-in SatNav.

I often just drive into the countryside after Googling an interesting route and sometimes I will take an ad hoc detour if I come across an interesting road or town. The SatNav is useful for finding a way back. No one uses paper maps anymore. I also bring along several mapping apps on my iPad just in case. If you like exploring new places you need a SatNav.

The car's a blast to drive though and that's what counts!

Careful you are criticizing your fellow Ontarian's :) The satnav is built by QNX in Waterloo

Well good, all the more reasons to be critical - they could do with a few honest opinions from fellow Ontarians or someone else, "out of province", will surely take their place… ;)!

This user interface is older than 10-year-old technology. It's about time someone shook up the SatNav industry. I understand Eddy Cue is on Ferrari's board of directors. You can imagine what he thinks of the QNX interfaces.

It's the same system they are still selling on some Chrysler models today!

    That's true.

I'm not very familiar with these items but I took a quick look at the Infotainment systems shared between Ferrari and Chrysler. QNX also sounded familiar and it is essentially the UNIX OS kernal that the systems are based on. There are many flavours of UNIX and QNX is a secured version from RIM (hence from Waterloo, ON). QNX is likely not responsible for the behaviour and appearance of the SatNav screens, which are application-drive, not OS-driven.

Chrysler's infotainment systems are collectively named "UConnect" and here is a webpage describing UConnect and QNX's role.

UConnect appears to offer 2 different SatNav models based on 6.5" and 8.4" screen sizes. Depending on the Chrysler vehicle, SatNav comes either on a 6.5" screen or the 8.4" screen. My 2013 Dodge RAM has the UConnect 8.4AN SatNav which has a much better user interface based on a Garmin system. Here's the 8.4" infotainment screen showing an audio function. Not sure what the 6.5" system is based on, probably also Garmin.

Here is the same system showing a map in 2D. It's much better detail than the QNX.

And finally, here's the 6.5" system on a Fiat 500 which interestingly still looks better than our Ferrari SatNav.

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

The downside of the 8.4AN system in my truck is that traffic info appears to depend on use of a Sirius XM connection which unfortunately presents no other utility for me.

I think carmakers need to adopt the software strategies of computer hardware/software/services companies like Apple where the value of the hardware products are retained for many years longer than their competitors' because they are compatible with ongoing software upgrades and 3rd party applications.

At the moment, infotainment systems (which are really computers) are not really treated as upgradable platforms or commercially-attractive markets by themselves, mainly because they make up a tiny portion of what is really just a car-making company, not a computer company. So infotainment systems are always after-thoughts, behind the times and lack any clear upgrade path.

Theoretically, a touch-screen system should open up limitless potential for upgrades because it's much less dependent on hardware limitation for data input and UI. But as it stands, these systems will likely operate the same way throughout the lifespan on the car. It's silly really.

    Thanks for your advice, Deppi.

I just received the Tetrax and initially couldn't clip on the vent. Then I pushed in the top part of the vent so the lower side came out where I clipped it on.

Is it the way you did it? Do you think it is firm enough to hold iPhone or you have a better way to attach it? I am concerned it might get bumped and hit the Central Tunnel.

We have a Jeep GC Overland as well as the Cali. What I really hate is that, while the head units are the same, the controls behind the steering wheel are reversed. In one car the left side does the volume while in the other the right side is the volume.

A little bit of perspective...the previous SatNav in Ferrari's were appalling. Obscenely, no, criminally over priced and unusable.

The Cali was a big step forward for Ferrari. Unfortunately, the Cali's system still leaves a lot to be desired.

Luca said that Ferrari wants to have more of a collaborative interface system which allows owners to pair their smart phones and ipads with the digital interface in the cars. In this way, the owner is able to update the Sat Nav whenever they update their devices rather than be locked into legacy car devices.

I think that is much better for everyone involved. Ferrari doesn't want to be in the business of maintaining SatNav and owners want the flexibility to pick and choose and change when they want.

Since my google maps on my iphone works better than my Cali Sat Nav, I just pair my iphone and use the google maps to guide me sometimes.

The Cali Sat nav is sometimes infuriatingly stupid whereas the Google maps is "smarter" in helping find the destination.

*** I didn't specr the Ferrari SatNav on my the 458 spider order because of these reasons, plus the 458 SatNav isn't even a touch screen.

+1 Ferrari needs to leapfrog others. Just returned from a trip where I rented a new Chevy rental SUV. The satnav was excellent, as was the Bluetooth pairing. Without reading any manuals I got my phone paired, my destination entered and was on my way in minutes, listening to my own playlists and being well-guided to where I needed to go.

+1. Thankfully, I don't have to use SatNav that often but I find Waze to be far superior to the OEM SatNav. Did not order on my Spider either.
