    Phils announcer Harry Kalas dies

    BY THE INQUIRER STAFF

Harry Kalas, the Phillies' Hall of Fame announcer, died at 1:20 p.m. today, the Phillies announced.

Mr. Kalas collapsed in the press box at Nationals Stadium in Washington at about 12:30 p.m. and was rushed to George Washington University Medial Center.

The cause of the death was not announced. Today's game against the Nationals will be played, but the team will not visit the White House tomorrow.

"We lost Harry today," David Montgomery, the team president, said. "We lost our voice."

Mr. Kalas, who was found unconsious, missed most of spring training after undergoing undisclosed surgery in Feburary. That surgery was unrelated to the detached retina that sidelined him for part of last season.

Mr. Kalas, who turned 73 on March 26, has broadcast Phillies games since 1971. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 as the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award. He is entering the final season of a 3-year contract that he signed in December 2006.

Met him a bunch of years ago at a wedding, he was best man.

When the couple went to leave he announced with that amazing voice of his, "They're OUTTA Here!!!"

I ran into him once or twice on other occasions, always seemed to have a minute for anyone who wanted to talk to him.

    Sorry to see him go.

I remember when Gene Hart cashed in and I wondered if I could ever listen to a Flyers game again. I know Harry was part-time as of late, but he will be missed to be sure.

He will definitely be missed. One of the last great voices in baseball or any sport for that matter. It was tough watching the game today and even tougher watching the post game. Michael Barkin just about broke down during his opening monologue. Harry was a great, great man. Always made time for his fans no matter what. Very sad day in Philadelphia.

    This sucks... big time :-(

Summer won't be the same without Harry's voice serenading me as I curl up on the sofa or relax in the hammock.

His voice on NFL films was also legendary after taking over from John Facenda. Classic, simply classic!

I grew up listening to him on the radio. What a great announcer. He will be missed.

He's now up there with Richie Ashburn looking down on the Phils.

What a sad day for Philly....

+1 He always used to come to opening day for my little league in Media, he lived not to far away. Always was kind to people that were kind to him, a real shame :(
