Thanks for posting the trailer. It made me curious to see if the release date was still near the end of the year...it is. September 20, 2013 release date for US Markets (maybe other markets as well). Same weekend as the Singapore GP. I would expect some cross promotion.
They have to have CGi so the movie can be made appealing to the general public and be a box office success. I can understand purist complaining but there's NO money in making a movie for purist
As a "purist" I don't have an issues with well-done CGI, it's not like they're going to built accurate replicas of 70's F1 cars and then race them at 10/10s including crashes. I see more concessions to general audience success in the love stories in "Lemans" and "Grand Prix". Watching the Rush trailer on my PC's screen the CGI looks pretty good IMO (then again I really enjoyed Avatar) I'll just be happy if the sound guys can at least decently match revs&shifts with the on screen action Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Absolutely right. My complain is more about the hyperbolic filming and editing typical in modern Hollywood actions films, that combined with less than perfect CGI make films look like videogames, but as you said, this is what the teenagers that pay the tickets want, so it is what it is.
Spot on. I can't even watch movies like "Transformers" because the action scenes give me a headache. Teenagers shouldn't be a significant target demographic for Rush so fingers crossed it doesn't have Michael Bay-like action scenes.
Looks good. Keep in mind they're going to have to "Hollywood it up" some in order to get the average person to the theater.
I will be curious to see if either driver is cast as the "good" one or the "bad" one. Much like with Prost/Senna, good vs bad is based on which driver your connect with individually. The preview seemed a bit tilted towards Hunt, but I'll wait to see before passing any judgement. Only bone I have to pick is the claim of Hunt/Lauda as "tow of the greatest rivals the track has ever witnessed". If that's the standard Howard is working towards, why not Senna/Prost instead? To me, that was the fiercest rivalry in modern F1 (can't speak to anything pre- mid '70's)
Senna/Prost doesn't have a Hollywood ending, Lauda/Hunt does... and they are easily two of the greatest rivals the track has ever seen, just as Senna/Prost are.
I hate it when they 'invent' science. I was watching an episode of CSI Miami. A girl had a bottle of champagne forced on her and she drank so much it expanded her stomach. Later she died. The cause of death was delayed drowning. The explanation was that the stomach was so full of champagne that it traversed the stomach wall and spread into the lungs causing her to drown. Oh my god. What a joke. On another CSI Miami, they had a Gulfstream 200 modified to go into orbit and a guy died there. This is why this show was cancelled.
The 2008 WC could also become a movie...'' the first black F1 driver, last race of the season, last lap, last corner, and he wins it...'' People that don't know F1 will walk out angrily saying it'll be Hollywood manufactured crap! -- Film looks good, although I agree it'll have some hollywood BS in there as well (they do need to make money, in the end). The bit where Hunt and his girlfriend are driving in a car and then screaming is one of those things, and the CGI. I wish they used a different filter for the filming, stuff that Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez use for a lot of their films, to give it that more 'outdated' look.
It was a great rivalry for all of one year. If there is a "Hollywood" story to be told it is the courage of Lauda. He is still one of my all time favs. In the cockpit he was courage and class defined-something these guys today could learn from IMHO.
Trailer looked meh. Maybe not something I'll watch. Could just be that its a trailer, but I'm not a fan of cutting every half or three quarters of a second to make an action piece look faster. :\ I'm also the kinda guy that can watch a 500 mile NASCAR race from the in car cam of just one car for the whole race, so I may be an odd ball here.
Teenagers outnumber old foggies of that era by at least 3:1. So yea, it has to make money so by default they are the target audience/demographic.
That's how I see it too. Based on Thor being cast as Hunt, I get the sense he'll be the "good guy/hero' in the movie, but to me Lauda is undoubtedly the main story of that season. No matter how crazy he tends to sound at times now, the guy was the epitome of what an F1 driver should be back in the day. Still bitter about the ending (won't spoil the movie for those who don't know what happened).
I'm a bit more optimistic, as Ron Howard is on record as being aware of the genuine respect and unlikely friendship between Hunt and Lauda (a hint of which is included in the trailer). Also, speaking as the Penske F1 team's 'go-fer' in 1975, I'm looking forward to seeing how well they captured the ambience of the period -- the casting of Snetterton as Fuji notwithstanding! Another hopeful sign is that the McLaren team manager that year, Alastair Caldwell, was the main technical advisor. Yes, the movie will make concessions to the general audience, but so did 'Grand Prix', a movie which enthusiasts can certainly appreciate.
Before VFX A site that may interest a few of you. There's a good chance if you are outside of this industry you could be quite surprised how much of almost any movie is VFX in post. The VFX usage across non-action sequence movies is really quite high. My point is not how much CGI it is you notice in movies these days, it's how much you don't notice.
True. CGI is in pretty much every movie. The average person however only notices it in action scenes or scenes of things that are not real (sci-fi, etc...)
i have been excited for this movie since last summer when my daughter's friend was a production assistant to ron howard during filming. i think it has chance to replace lemans as best car movie of all time. btw, to me the sound will be more important than video effects and i know they got that spot on
