Anyone have experience with run-flat tires (some were SEM on California T's?
The last thing in the world you want on a sports car are run flat tires. If you have a big limo with bulletproof glass, yes. Run flats are great. But any other situation, forget it. They are terrible! One of the funny things about a run flat tire is if you get a nail in one, even a small nail, the tire is shot. They are twice the cost of a regular tire too. They are noisy, poor handling, and heavy.
...and since the sidewall is harder (to carry the load on a flat) and not as pliable as a regular tire, it rips open more easily if you hit a pothole....and the tire is shot.
While not a fan, they have gotten much better with time. Those on my C8 Z06 are not bad. However, they are heavy and I would not choose a run flat tire for a Ferrari. FWIW a nail puncture can be repaired if it is in the main tread area.
The C5 Corvette debuted in model year 1997 and came only with Goodyear run-flat tires. It may have been the first sports car to come only with run-flats. These tires had the flaws mentioned above and were universally panned by magazine testers. After some years Corvette moved to Michelin fun-flats ("ZP" in Michelin-speak). These were a big improvement and have only gotten better since then. The fastest C7 and C8 models come with Michelin run-flats including the Cup 2 R. These cars deliver world-class performance in every comparison test, and I have never read a magazine test that had any negative comments about the tires.
If there is a high probability that your car will come under automatic small arms fire by the Cartel, then yes - otherwise, no. Ray
