"Talon 38" is right, and there is a "caveat" here: the change in color happened "sometimes during the calendar year 1987"; a car built in the second half of 1987 would qualify as a 1988 in the countries where "Model Year" was used...
I have never been able, to this day, to pinpoint the change from 300/6 to 300/9 by an accurate chassis number. Your best bet is therefore the paint label under the right end of the engine hood...

Yeah, for sure look for the paint label on the actual car, but it's likely to be 300/9. My car is an 87 model built July 1987 and is 300/9.

I remember when ordering touchup paint, some of the online databases had a different variant listed than what the sticker said. And some suppliers only have one variant and not others, or just list Rosso Corsa with no variations. Pretty sure some of the old touchups on my car were done by previous owners with 300/6, since they look off by a shade.

Incidentally, Rustoleum "Sunrise Red" is a darn near perfect match for my 300/9 paint. Found that out when painting my daughter's Pinewood Derby car, that she styled after my 328. It looked so close, I used a dab on a small chip inside one of the wheel arches, and darned if it didn't match near perfectly. I wouldn't use it somewhere nice, but for hidden places it's fine.

I found in the owner’s manual the paint code label should be on the engine hatch but it was not there. I checked the door jams. The VIN sticker shows the car being manufactured 1/88. I am going to ask Dr Colorchip about 300/9. Thanks.

I got a lead on the Gentleman that imported the car into the US today. Joseph Serra. I will call in the morning. The oldest document I have on the car was the first service record from 1989.

Considering the chassis number, 99,99% that it should be 300/9 indeed.

Bruno, the chassis number is very close to mine, which is 75083. The paint code on my car is 300/9.

yeah, 300/9 is a very balanced bright red, it looks better when there's plenty of clouds in my opinion, it becomes somewhat more 'dark 'red.
the newer Rosso Corsa DS/322 like in the 360 and F430 looks identical.

    Hi Paul..
You know me: "Never say never with Ferrari"; so the odds might be that, somehow, for reasons escaping us mere mortals, a guy woke up in Ferrari's paint booth and found an old can or two of 300/6, and "voilà", you've got a car, in the middle of the 300/9 paint run, in 300/6 again.
That's why I wrote "99,99%"; "never say never", etc...
But I'm convinced it should be 300/9, yes; no doubt about it considering the chassis number (well: let's say 0,01% of doubt, maybe...who knows?)

    Rgds

To the O.P ("1bigfish") please do take a picture of the stamped chassis number on the metal bar, passenger side, along the engine, and the assorted riveted plates that might be there (?); my friend Bertrand, as he told you above, might be able to identify the country where the car was sold first...

Looks like the car was repainted (based on masking artifacts around that sticker) so it may not be as critical that you get exact with 300/9, since you no longer have factory paint. And to be honest, even if it was factory paint it may have some age/fading to it anyway unless, the car has gone through paint correction. Matching paint on older cars and restored/repainted cars using the code can be a bit of a folly.
