I'm looking to buy something special for my wife this Christmas. It seems to me that Rolex and good deals don't go hand in hand. Any suggestions where a guy could get a deal on a new Rolex???

Depends on your perception of a "good deal" and the model desired. Any AD should be able to offer discounts at 10%/15%/20% for SS/TT/gold. Used Rolexes hold their values quite well.

Did you want to buy new or used? What model/material?

Buy it in Alberta and avoid the PST. The savings is significant.

David. I have bought and sold a few on this site. But be very careful and check for references on the Board. Some of the regulars know who to deal with. Some of these guys have new and used stuff so check often. Do some research and make sure you know the model number and series you are looking for eg. GMT II 16710 Series "K". I recently picked up the new SS GMT with the ceramic bezel for $5,200. RDV could only get down to $7,000 plus the taxes. So there is a significant savings to be had if you know where to look. Plus the U.S. economy is in the toilet. Watches are one of my past times and I am thinking about going down to NY for the weekend. I need a new Panerai and I can get one so much cheaper there that the flight and trip will pay for itself. PM with the model you are looking for and I will see if I can help. http://www.rolexforums.com/

David, this may sound crazy, but its the best advice anyone ever gave me about buying jewellry and watches for my girlfriend/wife.

If you really want to surprise her, take her on a weekend trip to the Bahama's, or a trip down to the Carribean islands., and then do your watch shopping down there.

You will basically save 40% of the cost of a watch while buying it down there, and the savings will end up paying for the entire vacation too!

Thanks for all the advice. I'm looking for a Yacht Master in either SS or two tone. They cost about the same from the dealer. I would rather buy a new watch as I am giving this to her as a birthday gift. Prices I've seen thus far have been in the $7,500 to $8200 taxes included.

Great idea until customs hits you with duty on the watch

I am not saying this will happen, but out here, everyone goes abroad thinking they will sneak it past customs. Many are proclaiming they bought the watch here, when in fact they bought it at another locale. The agents then ask for the customer card Rolex includes with every watch ( BTW which every dealer tells you to travel with when going out of canada) indicate the watch purchase date and location.

Of course a person can not produce this and the duty charges apply.

On my last international trip they asked me about the card, I showed it to them and I had no issue. A fellow passenger also bought a rolex and was not able to produce the card or receipt. Custom informed him of the duty charges to which the tune changed to " ok, it is actually a fake"

Customs also changed their tune - they advised if the traveller did not want to pay duty charges and if the watch was indeed a fake, then it would not be so heartbreaking to confiscate and destroy it.

Amazing what a hammer does to an oyster case....

Im my opinion do things properly...but it from a dealer in canada and avoid trying to save a quick buck.
In my comparison also ROLEX is the same price internationally. I just bought a datejust which was 9300 in LV ( plus nevade state tax 7.75%, then exchange) and 9450 here in alberta ( plus 5%GST)

All in all I ended up ahead buying a watch here - the dealer knowns me and I am happy.
But to each his own and I am sure there are many other who were successful and managed to get what they wanted for much less than local prices

I agree, this scenario is quite possible. But I think people get stopped 10% of the time. I think its still a risk worth taking.

Buying overseas doesn't help with a Rolex. Rolex prices are generally the same worldwide (after adjusted for currency). In fact, Rolex purchases in Canada may be a great buy right now. Last year, when the CAD was strong, Rolex started moving toward US pricing. Now that the CAD has weakened significantly, some of the best deals are right here.

Dave the Alberta thing sounds pretty good. Last year in St Marten there was a 35% price difference off retail and no tax. Very tempting. As soon as I got back I went looking, which happened to be boxing day, and the place on Bloor St West at the Colonnade was giving at least a 25% discount which is unheard of for Rolex. That was without even any final negoations. I'm sure that now is a pretty good time to be in the market for something like a Rolex considering the economy and all.

Good luck and let me know if you get a good deal somewhere cause I'd love to bite the bullet some day. It's one of those things you gotta have, that and a Breitling in rose gold / leather band.
