I'm in Europe and thinking about getting a GMT...the place I went to in Spain had them for 5700 Euros without vat. She also said if I was serious there could be a small discount.

    Can anyone tell me:

    1. What kind of discount I should ask for?

    1. What is the right USD price to pay for one of these from an official dealer?

I'm looking for the steel one with the blue and black ceramic bezel that was just launched at some show in Geneva they say (although the price above was for the regular black one)...

    Thanks in advance!

I finally got to a computer and had a chance to check out prices...as usual, the prices from stores in the US are about the same as the converted prices from Europe. And by getting it in the US, I won't have to stress over having to potentially pay import duty when bringing back to the US. (Although the last time I did that the agent smiled and said "welcome back to the US" with a wink and I didn't have to pay). I'm still going to look around in my last european stop and see if one can be had here for a fair bit lower...if not, I'll get it back in the states.

I have heard that the duty free shop at Heathrow was where to get the best deal from an AD on Rolexes.

I'm getting 10% discounts offered. Of course that assumes their list price is the "official list price". I have no idea...

Turns out, *if* the vat reduction/refund is what they say it is, then I can get the two models I'm looking at for less here in Portugal than in the US. The explorer II is about $1300 less and the GMT II with blue/black is $2000 less (although I suspect the few US prices I see on line are likely inflated due to the limited availability for that color right now).

I may pick one up. Oddly, the issue for me is that I'm not sure I want to be the guy with the Rolex trying to show off...I say odd cause I have no problem driving the Ferrari around (and its red for crying out loud), but then only car guys that I know and strangers see me in it. I purposely don't drive it to work and try not to mention it there.

Otoh, the watch would be worn at work and at gatherings with friends...I'm sure it's a matter of widely differing points of view, but the Rolex wearer was typically assumed to be (saying it kindly) "trying to impress" where I come from...I would get one because I love the look and want a dual time zone watch. I guess I could just day F'em and try to not worry about customers, investors and subordinates...or maybe just not wear it at work? Am I alone in this concern?

Just say F'em and get what you want. Life is too short to deal with that kind of crap.

Never ever wear a Rolex in front of customers or employees. ( Unless you are a sales manager dealing only with a sales force; then wave it as often as possible ;) )
That whats nice about other high end brands.
No-one other than another watch nut knows what they are or their worth.

I got about 30% off on my wife's gold Yachtmaster from an AD, but that was a few years ago.

On gold rolexes I have gotten somewhere in the 20 to 22% discount not sure about stainless watches.... and in several cases these were watches not in stock that had to be ordered i.e. not in stock.. not sure if the discount would be larger on a watch sitting in a case... either way it only takes a week or so if they have it in stock .....
I would think unless you can get a big savings you would be better off getting one in town.. comes in handy when you have any issues....later on ..

Somewhat related, though this is an old thread...
I just got back from the Bahamas (Nassau). I had some serious discussions with the Authorized Dealer down there. They were NOT interested in dealing. They offered me up to 10% off all-gold, and only about 3% of SS. TT was somewhere in between, closer to 10%. I hate when they try to claim the "duty free" angle as making up the rest of the discount...

I walked away, they were just too far off of the mark. Mind you, these were standard Datejust and Day Date models we were shopping. Nothing extremely rare or hard to find. I was disappointed, but hey, I can understand their comfort level. Unfortunately, down there, it doesn't seem to be much about anything other than the immediate sale (no long term relationship value for tourists). I'll stick with my local AD and my more stable, reasonable discounts.

Where John Bull? Duty is free is cheaper than US but then you have to pay a huge tax to customs when you bring it in. I've negotiated with US dealers and gold is better off msrp than SS.

There is only one Authorized Dealer for Rolex in the Bahamas. But, I don't like to name names on the internet, in case it ever gets back to me!!! :)
