Well, if you're comparing how ugly the PP Nautilus design is, then yes, it's a better match to how ugly the Birkin is.
Rolex isn't haute horology the way Patek is, and the way Hermes is haute couture. So the analogy between a Rolex Steel Daytona and a Hermes Birkin falls short on that level, if not more.
I'm well aware of PP's place in the watch world. However your comments are off point as this is a ROLEX thread and the preceding discussion was about Rolex Daytonas, so replacing Daytona with PP Nautilus then makes it a non sequitor.
I'm a Rolex guy who has never liked the Daytona -- until now! You are making me reconsider. If I get one, one of you will need to explain it to my wife. A watch that hasn't come up here -- at least that I saw -- is the Sky Dweller. It was next on my list. Thoughts? Image Unavailable, Please Login
My wife got this for me as a birthday gift in October. To my eye just stunning in a reserved sort of way. She said it took her 2 years to find after I mentioned how much I liked the photo of it in an add. Apparently the SS W/Blue Dial is the most popular according to the AD. It is large compared to the GMT, Sub, Daytona etc. For me the size and weight are no issue as I am on the large side myself. It has replaced my GMT as my DD. I would suggest you try one on and decide for yourself. Happy to answer any specific questions you may have. Good luck!
I have a SS blue dial jubilee strap SkyDweller - as said above, it's a bigger watch - it's one of my favs. Currently still waiting on my Daytona - first talked to my AD back in Nov 2021. Still no luck. Asked for the SkyDweller at that time, and got that one August 2022. Since then, nada - I've turned down more than I've bought including a two tone Daytona.
@Greg34 and @NYFAIM - thank you! I've been looking at them solely online. To my eye, they always appear smaller than a Submariner or GMT. I'm not a small guy, but those watches always feel substantial if not big when I wear them. I'll have to find a Sky Dweller in person and take a look before I jump.
If you go into your local Rolex dealer, quite often they will have display models of many of their watches which you can try on and see how you like it. Actually being able to buy it, is a whole 'nother story. Sent from my SM-G998U using Tapatalk
I really hope I can walk out with a new Rolex, but high probability I won't, which I will then tell them to **** off like I did the Ferrari dealer and will hit the open market.
I wasn't being literal, but just the entire dealer game I started, but quickly found out it wasn't for me. Bought the used 2013 Cali off the Boardwalk floor and immediately ordered a new 2017 Cali T, when the Cali T was delivered traded the 2013 Cali back in. So at this point they've made profit on 3 transactions. Do you think any favors built up yet for another new model and trading the T back? Hell no, if anything they started treating me more like crap. Cali T was end of production, so I understood the depreciation situation, but Boardwalk was dicks offering $20-30k less than other authorized dealers. I also had gained no ground getting on another model list. Ferrari Ft. Lauderdale was awesome! They took the Cali T on trade for the GT3 & cash for a value $40k higher than Boardwalk! It was on that day I decided the new Ferrari game wasn't for me and they could "**** off".
I prefer the Submariner and GMT for their legibility and simplicity -- luxury is good, but I have a practicality streak. The Daytona is harder to read, but it has the motor sport association and it's equally iconic. Top of the Rolex sport watch hierarchy, no doubt. For the money, I can think of other watches I'd pursue. It's all down to taste.
I'm very happy with my Tudor Black Bay Chrono Panda, my wife has a reverse Panda. Not the glamour from a Daytona, but the sister of Rolex makes nice watches too. Daniel Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here are my chronos, I'd like to add the Daytona to top off but only if I can get it at msrp. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Any Rolex with an Oysterflex watch is wonderful. The best is a SkyDweller. It's a true annual calendar, which is a fairly rare thing. It's the best watch Rolex makes. Although I want to try a 1906. No AD cares if you wear flipflops or not. They treat everyone like a prospective buyer unless they look very shady. Like with a sledgehammer in hand. Call smaller town ADs once you understand the market. Pittsburgh is OK, smaller towns here like Altoona have excellent customer service and a surprisingly good selection. Went into an AD yesterday. Had a prior relationship but have not purchased a watch from them in about 10 years. Walked out with YM2 and really happy with the buying experience.
Went into my AD last week. Previously bought a SS Air King from them. They have nothing. Zero. No expected time for new watch inventory. Salesman pushed the certified pre-owned option. WTF?
I think visiting the A.D and build a relation with them will work. Do not expect a steel DAYTONA or BLRO as your first purchase. Not going to happen.White gold or yellow gold or two tones are a possibility. If they have a jewellery store buying some will help.Best way is to visit them.I talk from my experience.
I bought my Rolex new from my AD. Had it maintained at my AD. Sold it back to my AD. I'm on a wait list with my AD. Not a peep in 6 months.
