I've never given much thought to joining AAA or anything like that for roadside assistance. Mostly, because I drive newer cars and they come with that sort of things for the years that I own them.

But - I've recently gotten myself an older car to add to the garage (manual 360 spider...yay!) and, while it's in wonderful shape, I was giving some thought to what I'd do if I got stranded somewhere. I wasn't quite sure!

Anyone have any recommendations ? I've heard horror stories about AAA sending a non flatbed and/or drivers coming out and refusing to tow a Ferrari etc.

    Thanks in advance.

I believe the insurance company has the number to call because it should be included with your exotic car coverage ..at least mine is

My policy has coverage for it, but doesn't seem to facilitate it. There's no 800 # to call for them to dispatch, they simply cover $350 each time but you have to find your own towing company. I guess that's fairly easy to do, but was thinking that if AAA or someone else had one # to call and they could effectively handle the dispatch...that would be preferable.

I would it during business hours call your local Indy or dealer and have them send someone or proactively call them now and get a good company to use that is familiar with the Ferrari

My Indy recommended someone to tow my car for a major for over 50 miles ..

Good suggestion. It's kind of a long story in that the car will be kept (and driven) in a vacation place I have...that's far away from my independent and my dealer. BUT - I can reach out to independents and dealers near there for sure. Thanks for the suggestion.

I’ve had AAA for years (CAA in Canada before that) with no complaints.

As for the horror stories of non flatbed or drivers refusing to tow, that’s never happened to me. The three times I can remember calling AAA for the Ferraris - blown tire on the 430, and burst coolant hose in the 328 twice - it was never an issue. In fact once the dispatcher at AAA told me on the phone that it might take a little bit longer, because she was “not going to send just anyone for that car.”

I have bought numerous new cars and always thought the roadside assistance was a nice perk with the warranty, until I had to use it. In my experience, manufacturer RA is trash.

I've had AAA since my first car at 18, used it numerous times and has always been awesome. Cheap, too. Once I got stranded in my WS6 middle of nowhere, Arkansas. In a storm. Closest repair facility was 70 miles away. Tow didn't cost me a dime, driver got there within a half hour and he even had all his teeth. Outstanding.

AAA has been an absolute nightmare twice with my Ferraris stranded, with a driver not showing up one time after waiting hours and another time with a driver showing up and then refusing to tow, again after waiting hours. Believe me, you don’t want to be the guy stranded on the side of a busy interstate with a broken Ferrari.

Hagerty offers a AAA-like add on to their policies and I’ve wondered if their contracted tow agencies are any better.

At a minimum, get to know a few local exotic-tow companies and put them on speed dial. I say a few because you’ll call and all drivers will be on the other side of town; you’ll be too far away for them to want to come get you; it’ll be a weekend or holiday (many don’t work on those days); or they will be short staffed. Unfortunately, speaking from experience here.

My solution is buying my own tow set up (truck and trailer) to bail myself out.

I'm sure it depends on where you are as to helping exotics, I can't remember any of mine getting stranded.

I purchase AAA for my entire family, including RV and extended distance.

Bailed out many a family member, including towing a 38' diesel pusher I got stuck in the sand (which my friends thought was hilarious and who posted many a pic on facebook).

They will also come to you to replace batteries at a very cost effective price (at least in So Cal).

I think the key with AAA is you have to tell the operator that you have a Ferrari and they need to send a company capable of taking a Ferrari, which also means it has to be a flat bed.

Fortunately only once I had to have my FF towed to the dealer from my home. The flat bed came promptly and the driver was a professional.

Of course I'm in a populated area. If you live in a rural area you may have a problem, but then you may have a problem with any tow company if you are remote.

BELIEVE ME, I did…both times…explaining in great detail…even using the term “articulating flat bed” which was the key term communicated to me by my mechanic before calling AAA. They (call center) either don’t listen, don’t comprehend, or don’t care. It’s happened twice now with two different Ferraris in two different states (and hence two different AAA clubs).

Well then you have to stop breaking down!:D

That is unfortunate, may be I was just lucky. Although over the years my wife has used them several times with no problem, but she wasn't driving a Ferrari.

Oh they’ve been great with non-Ferraris of mine, but with my Ferraris, total nightmare.

It’s been my experience your results are entirely dependent on the local subcontractor. Doesn’t matter which you go with. Just me.
