Good stuff Andre! You must have ended up with a photographer/media pass to shoot from the hot pit lane?
Thanks for the comments everyone. Yes - I had a media vest - so I was able to shoot from pitlane - and pretty much everywhere else I wanted to Here's the article I wrote on the Ferrari Challenge races: http://www.sub5zero.com/motorsports/2011-ferrari-challenge-takes-laguna-seca-famous-corkscrew And one on the F1 Clienti cars: http://www.sub5zero.com/motorsports/ultimate-track-day-ferrari-f1-cars-roar-through-mazda-raceway-laguna-seca And if you want to see how close I got to the cars at full-speed - this will give you an idea -- yes, vest 173 is me! http://ALRPhotography.zenfolio.com/p405319335

Rick, Thanks for the great video. i was wondering if we could get a group to go up to the Virginia City Hill Climb in Sept. We could leave on Thur. and maybe go through Yosemite and over Tioga Pass up 395 and maybe even do a couple of more passes. Maybe spend Thur. night at the Awhanee or just have lunch there and keep on going.
Sounds like a lot of fun. Is there a website or something with more details on the run or should I just google "virginia city hill climb"?
The FCA Pacific region has a group going. I think they actually help put it on. Checkout http://fcapr.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=87&club_id=26666&item_id=172841
Hmm, interesting Sam. Looks like there's a separate run up the mountain this month called the Spectre 341 taking place this coming weekend. The September event is hosted by FCA/SAAC (Shelby Club.) Entry fee is $500 which is a tad steep considering that you can do a track day at Laguna Seca for about 2/3rds of that amount with Trackmasters. However, I've never done the Virginia City Hillclimb so maybe this is one to add to the bucket list.
I am seriously considering it. It seems like a great way to abuse a set of tires, drive a mountain road through the twisty bits without the harmful side effects of oncoming traffic or the po po. I may not be the fastest in my slow 550M but it will be fun! JC
The track does not have steep drop offs in which you can kill yourself. The hillclimb puts a little sport into driving on the edge. I presume what would make it great is the drive up and back and hanging with the Pacific region and partying with them.
Okay Sam & JC, I'm starting to heat up to the idea. As I was driving home tonight, two words popped into my mind: "Rental car." I need to see who rents a decent sports sedan without a per-mile fee. In fact, if anyone else is interested, we could do this as an all-rental-car...ahem...trip. Of course, we would NEVER enter the cars in the actual Challenge. We would ONLY drive them to the event. And as responsible drivers and renters, we would purchase full coverage for the trip.
If we are thinking "rental car" then we should find out if we can nab a Cadillac CTS-V and take it up there. 4 doors, luggage room and 556 HP. We can even do a "trunk mount" NOS system with a single fogger in the inlet duct. JC
For the Laguna Seca trip, I tried to get a CTS-V, but all Hertz had was a CTS. Unfortunately they ended up trying to rent us a DTS even though we had reserved a CTS. It all worked out in the end after I refused the DTS and they gave us a BMW 328i which worked out much better than the CTS would have on the twisties.
I test drove the CTS-V coupes at Laguna Seca last Dec. and that car kicked butt. I think we should go for a wagon. Anyone have connections at GM or Cadillac. What a great promotion for them. Four people and luggage go up to the Virgina City Hill Climbs, unload their stuff, then race the car and kick butt with it.
