I've decided to bring Jack's prized 1959 Ferrari 250GT LWB California Spider to auction in Scottsdale, which occurs January 16th & 17th. Gooding was selected based on their impressive success auctioning California Spiders over the years.

So if you have some spare cash, here's your opportunity to own one of the very few (if any) long-term ownership unrestored California's.

I am gradually listing books and literature from Jack's estate on eBay under the seller `castorestate', so if anyone wants to see what's available, look there. Jack had a LOT of books, many on Ferrari's but also other car marques, so it will take me a while to make a big dent in all those items.

It was really great to see Jack driving his car all over. I didn't know him at all, but I saw him at various events. I really admired him for using that car as a car and enjoying it as it was meant to be. I'm sure that's car existence will never be the same now.

Very sorry to hear of Jack's passing. I first met Jack at a JAG club event when he drove his replica D-type. Sometime later I invited him to our Company's car show. I didn't see the D-type, but instead saw this fantastic Cal Spider. Of couse I thought it was a kit car, until I got closer and realized that it was the real deal. The owner wasn't around, but I soon ran into Jack and he said the battery was dead on the D, so he hoped I didn't mind that he brought his Cal Spider! He said it had not been running for some time, and he just got it out of Patrick Otis' shop and started driving it again. As I understand the story, he said he went to Italy to buy a Gulwing, but by the time he got there it had been sold. The proprietor had the Cal Spider, so he came home with it instead. Over the years, he would come to our other car shows and I would run in to him around Monterey in August. What a great guy and a true gentleman. RIP Jack.

Here is a reprint of what I posted earlier on FB.

Our friend Jack Castor passed away recently. He was a very cool and interesting guy. While he was hardly a youngster, his passing brought back memories of another friend, Jerome Contro, who passed way too early. I could not bring myself to attend his service, as it was as if it was Jerome all over again. Jack loved to drive his vintage Ferrari California, even when it was wet out, as if to prove that Ferraris don't melt in the rain. Since he lived in Half Moon Bay, I suppose if he had to wait for ideal conditions to go on a drive, he wouldn't have driven much! The top on his car didn't work, so during the 2011 FOG Rally, he and Tariq drove it all the way to LA and back with only the blue sky as the roof. The car was probably worth millions even in its unrestored state, but there was no selling it; for Jack, it was about driving the car with the top down, wearing his English driving hat and crusty jacket. Press on regardless. He and his car were featured in Forza Magazine not long ago. It's probably the only Ferrari purchase financed by putting up a VW Beetle as collateral. That was Jack. He will be missed.

I've found the original purchase documents for the VW Beetle (Jack didn't throw anything...as I've been learning as Trustee), pictures of Jack auto crossing that VW and a couple with it parked next to the Ferrari California!

I never met Jack but I was fortunate enough to see him enjoying his California Spyder a few times. Unexpectedly seeing it drive by was one of the highlights of my trip to Pebble Beach in 2013 and I will remember it forever. Hopefully the next owner honors his memory by enjoying it as much as he did. Attached is a photo I took of it a couple years ago.

It will be very, very difficult to see the California `go'. Hopefully Jack will be looking down and be thinking `good job'.

Thanks to all for providing these pictures which I've never seen before.

That was the only FOG drive I've taken my Dino on. Jack certainly loved to drive his Cal Spyder.

It's undergoing a total restoration by BMW Classic (along with the Elvis 507). Estimated completion is summer 2016.

Is the blue 507 now owned by BMW Classic like the Elvis 507?

70079 (Elvis 507) is owned by BMW. 70089 (blue, but originally papyrus) is owned by the estate, but is not for sale.

I don't follow auctions. Did it sell? I assume it will not be returning to the Bay Area?
