Anyone know if a average citizen can take a joyride on these? Any costs involved? Wanna do this before I die.

I guess that depends on which fighter jet you would like a ride in. How is your Russian? Head over that way and I'm sure you can get a ride in a Su something or other.

I seem to recall a thread here about the FAA or someone giving approval for an F4 Phantom to allow civilian rides right here in the US.

My mind could be wrong, but I don't think they said how long the flight would last, but it was sorta pricey. Taz suggested to only go for a ride if a US military pilot is in control...not a private guy. :)

Thanks for the links and the ad....but looking at the prices I'll be on the ground for a few more years. Cheapest I saw was 30.5k...I was hoping for 5 max :p

Harold- You can probably get a ride in a fighter trainer for a lot less than a real fighter. An F-4, for example burns around 10,000 lbs of jet fuel in an hour if the afterburners are not used too much except for take-off. That is about 1500 gallons at $4 or so a gallon, and that is just fuel and does not count the pilot's time or the maintenance costs.

An Albatros or similar aircraft will burn a fraction of that amount and still give 95% of the experience and you will probably get some stick time. Have fun.

    162nd TFG - AzANG (Tucson).

It was the ANG A-7 RTU.

They also trained regular A.F. pilots, who were assigned to the 4450th TFG (Nellis), which soon was unveiled as the unit, that also flew the F-117A, at night.

they maintain and operate a small fleet of russian jets to fly red air training for the Navy and Marines. the resumes of those involved is incredible. I think one of the Migs is for sale.

There's a company in Florida that has flight training packages in the "Zip Splat"............not cheap........but it's an aircraft which is equally as famous as the F-4.

Paul- Interesting. I always wanted a ride in an F-104. It was my favorite airplane as a kid in the 50s and early 60s. Looks like they got the aircraft from the Germans or Italians because it has the vertical stabilizer extension of the F-104G or F-104S. Since I was lucky, though, and have sorties in the F-4, F-16, and F-15, plus 2000 hours in F-111s, it will probably never happen.

Funny thing, though, I have no time in AF jet trainers. Went straight from the T-29C/D to the F-111D. That was a transition.

Bob- We had mostly F-104s with the small vertical stabilizer in the USAF, but Luke AFB did operate single and two seat F-104Gs in USAF markings, even though they were owned by the Luftwaffe. Nice painting.

    More like going from a PT-22 to a P-38.

It is amazing how raw the early jets feel compared to later technology. As a young FS at Tyndall, my first 250 hrs were in a T-33, and this in 1985. Back then I was also able to bag some rides in the F-100Fs used to train the drone check pilots-- What an amazing airplane. Another amazing plane was one sortie in an F-106 two seater. I always tried for an F-111, but never happened - a major career dissapointment.
Later on, ended up with a bit of F-15, -16 time and even one CF-18 ride. But for me, my 250 hours in the mighty F-4 -E and -G weasels were the best days of my humble AF life.

If you can get a ride in a modern jet fighter, just do not fly straight and level. Ensure you have a qualified pilot and hang on. If you do not come back sweating and bone ass exhausted, you didn't see what it's really like. It is a great experience.

But, what maybe some will not understand, is that, imho, any hour in the back seat of any modern jet is not as amazing as one hour solo in any airplane, even an Aeronca. And any hour in any airplane is better than any hour in any car.

If you want to really know Freedom and what being alive is, use the money and learn to fly.
    You will treasure every moment.

    Best to everyone

A good sports car and a decent plane cost the same money, but not much happens in the car when you pull back on the steering wheel at 80 mph...

One of my favorite drawings, the F-104G. I have got to do an F-105 to complete the century series since I have done the F-100, 101, 102 an 104. I remember an F-104 pilot telling me that dead sticking a 104 you had to stay above 245 knots and if you didn't have the altitude, you punched out.

As a kid growing up in the 60's all I remember were wings falling off the F-111's, and cracks in the wings of C5A's.
I was in San Antonio for software training a couple of years ago, the sights of the C5A's flying in and out was one to behold, brought back lots of memories living near the bases in California.

I really miss the days of the military air shows, where it was no problem to see 40+ minimum of different types of aircraft. Today there are basically about 12 different aircraft, or so it seems, that show up at an air 'show'.

    We went from F-100, 101, 102, 104, 105, 106, A6, A4, B57, F4, F5, RA5C, F8, F111, F11F, T-33, T-38, C97, C124, C133, and whatever else I forget down to F15 (maybe), F16, F18, F22, C130, C141, C17?, that's about it.
