What is up with these watches and the extraordinary prices? Not even a self winding rotor here. No precious metal. I guess you do get some time left on the warranty card though.

I don’t get it either. I think it is pure wealth signaling. It is large and uniquely shaped and crazy expensive and thus you are instantly recognized across the room as having cash. Period. Nothing more.

Probably a dozen Rolex’s I’d rather have ( and have money left over for nice dinners ) …. Don’t hate me :)

I like RM too, but I don't get the prices either. I understand they're great watches, but not for that kind of money. Yes, I know Paul Newmans with exotica dials could be had in the late 70s and early 80s for $300 or $400 and now they're worth a ton. To each his own.

When they were sub $100k they were potentially worth a look, but not at the prices they're commanding now.

Though on one hand, part of me wonders how much of these inflated prices are just dealers selling to each other then tacking on $10k each time it changes hands.

Richard Mille's are what they are because of one very smart man who controls the inventory and markets them like special edition Ferraris. He's also doing the same thing with AP's, and if you've tried to get one of them lately, you know what I'm talking about.

Oh, and my wife also happens to play a big part in his organization. ;)

It’s to weed out the really rich versus kinda rich. Like Ferrari collector David Lee says, it’s to show your at another level from the average 100 million Rolex owners out there.

This may offend some people, but I think if you wear a RM, it's because you want the most people to know you wear an RM. But I'm sure there are a few people who wear it because they appreciate it for what it is. Nothing wrong with wanting some recognition after you've made some life achievements, though. Maslov's pyramid at work.

RM not for me. More of a PP / AP guy. Never in a million years would I buy one. Even if I was a billionaire. In my opinion, and no offense to those have them, it's simply to make a statement but I think there are certain stereotypes as well associated with RM owners that perhaps are true to some extent.

I look at RM just as another watch brand/maker. I won't buy most of their models but would probably buy one or two, same with any other brand. Buy what you like, buy it for you and not for anyone else.

I don't get it either but a lot of people think I am a moron for a) having multiple watches - b) waiting years for some of them and c) what I have spent - which all five of my watches added together and including the massive appreciation recently for steel Rolexes and specific Tags (albeit nothing like the Rolexes) would not even make a decent dent in a RM. I think their marketing/endorsement strategy is genius (Nadal, Watson, Prost, F1 etc.) and obviously targets the hyper-wealthy audience with sick/crazy money versus the wealthy or successful working person demographic IMHO.

I am lucky enough to have a S/O who not only shares and appreciates my love of cars and watches but actually encourages it. I recently sent her a pic of the Bubba Watson model RM with a hyper-excited email stating that "the watch I have been waiting for and saving for FINALLY came in!!!! I can't wait to pick it up and we should have lunch when I do to celebrate!!!" - this was met with a brief AYFKM response and a statement to do with finding it in a cracker jack box - and she has pretty good taste in watches, shoes, cars etc. Was kinda funny :)

Anyway - Each to their own and I respect the nuances they have with regard to measuring g-forces for swing speed for golf and tennis and I think the Prost model has some trick features for cyclists but they are way out of my league and even if I won the Powerball tomorrow there is a LOOOONG list of Rolexes, Panaerais, APs, GPs, Omegas etc. that I would have before even considering a RM.

    Cheers

I don't get 99% of the watches posted on this site....just like cars I guess. And just like cars, there are watches made for everyone.

That's just it, even if you won the Powerball tomorrow and walked in there with a briefcase jammed with cash Wael would tell you to pound sand.

No worries  Like I said, if I had a briefcase full of cash that's probably one of the last places I would walk in to so not a problem- Each to their own and if they make their owners happy then I'm happy for them.

I'm certainly not taking anything away from the watches or people who own them- just commenting to the OPs thread entitled "I am not sure I get it" - i don't either and apparently many others don't as well.

    Cheers :)

Some of them are pretty interesting. The case of the RM 56-02 is made from one solid block of sapphire. But then again I think this model is a few million...

Well, maybe the design is original and it is RM, but I don't like this watch much. I wouldn't buy it.

I know some guys with serious wealth that are also watch aficionado. Not a single one of them owns an RM, but they all have various Rolex, Patek, AP, Lange, vintage stuff, and even boutique pieces like Dufour. Conversely I know three NFL athletes, two making league min, and they all have an RM and no other watches. All hat, no cattle.
