I guess I am an officially member of this elite club!! I have an early build 296 and 2 weeks ago while driving I got the pop up with the hybrid failure. Parked the car for 30 minutes and came back and everything was fine and all warning lights were gone. Car drove fine for the next 2 weeks.

Fast forward to yesterday, I decided to drive the car to the office, for a change. Got in the car and it wouldn’t start. Had power but immediately the below warnings popped up. It would make a very strange sound when I tried to hit start/stop for the second time (first click, everything powers up and cycles. second click to fire up the engine did nothing and all warnings triggered).

Called the dealer and they said they have not had a 296 with that problem yet. They said the earliest they can pick it up is late next week but if I can drive it to them that would be best. Left for work and came home later that day and tried again. Got the engine to fire up but immediately had the hybrid warning lights and the engine failure warnings.

I pulled the car out thinking I would attempt to drive to the dealer. Got a mile from my house and the warning lights were going crazy. Had 5 or 6 different warnings and various symbols pop up. (PEV failure, hybrid failure and lots of others), A/C went out and car wouldn’t shift. I immediately got it home and called the dealer. It will hopefully be picked up next week.

The hybrid battery is always full when I park and it is driven every weekend. I’m up to 850 miles on the car and typically drive it sat/sun for short drives. I left it on the charger overnight but it wouldn’t even charge (only 1 blue light would flash)

for those that have had this issue, what was the ultimate fix or problem?? Thanks for the help.

Do you leave the car plugged in ? I think the car needs to be plugged in all times.

Ferrari recommends it be plugged in to extend the life of the battery. (From the manual) It is NOT a requirement. If not driven for more than 2-3 days than yes, I do plug it in. Ev battery is always full when parked, regardless. I asked another dealer about this and they said it has nothing to do with the issue. There are others that have had this issue when the car has always been on the charger when it’s not driven.

Chet, Have you had this issue, or any issues with yours?

I would put money on the fact that your low voltage battery has somehow discharged. The solution is to directly connect the 12V LV battery (in the passenger footwell) to a heavy duty charger and try and charge it up directly. I encountered similar issues last week and fixed it by having road side assistance charge it up again and everything is fine again. See the other 296 problems chat. Someone else had a similar issue. Of your car is an early 296 it will also have the Li Ion battery (not later AGM) which discharges very quickly.

I don’t know about how the mechanics of how LV battery charges when you plug the car into a the normal hybrid plug in charger. However my Ferrari service manager told me that cars since the 812, Roma, SF90x 296 etc have an “intelligent alternator” design meaning the car doesn’t automatically charge the LV battery when you drive it but when the car decides to! Typically during deceleration.

So first stop would be to check the charge level of the LV battery. Road side assistance can help or if you have the Ferrari App it should show up on that…. Needs to be over 12V and ideally 13+ V

Thank you and very helpful. Do you need to disconnect anything when charging the battery in the footwell? What type of heavy duty charger? I have a smaller one that is more like a trickle charger but will go pick up a different one today.

My car did not come so try the feature to connect to the app. Only thing that shows up is the car, warranty info. I think that feature was added later on

Very strange. If that is an accurate reading then maybe not the same issue as mine but odd the car won’t start with the engine then eg in Qualifying mode. Did you try to put it in Quali before hitting the start button?

No. Only tried performance mode. Will try quali mode and see. I have a feeling it is going to spend some quality time at the dealer while they try and sort it out.

@mkraft3003 sorry this is happening to your 296. Maybe she's not so happy about your new AMG taking your attention away? :) I'm sure the temperamental electronics will be sorted out, but reading these reports does give me some pause about my yet to be produced GTB.

I’ve Had it 6 months without a single issue/problem before this occurred. Hopefully it’s not too complex for them to fix. (I’ve tried to keep the new car separated so no one gets jealous :p)

I did! Just added the carbon sill kick plates earlier in the week. Didn’t even get to take the car out with them installed. Oh well.

So, an update and interesting news. I figured maybe I’d try and start up the car today and see what happens. All warnings gone except for “engine control system failure” pictured below.

Took the car to fill up with gas and everything appears to be operating fine. A/C works, it’s shifting gears, acceleration is normal. I filled up, came home and drove in pure EV for 2 miles and it was fine. The CEL never went away and interestingly as soon as I went from EV to qualifying mode the engine control warning flashed again but it still drove fine.

Very odd and not sure how safe it is to drive it a little longer. This trip was about 6 miles. I could use my OBD II scanner and clear the CEL but would rather the dealer check it out.

I’ve had my 296 GTB for almost two weeks…150 miles so far…no issues ….I do leave it on the charger all the time…
Do you think there is a possibility of some type of power surge? We have a lot of lightning in our area…so I went ahead and started using a surge protector as our house has been hit recently….

Not good--expecting my 296 in a month--now you have me worried that Ferrari has not fully vetted this machine.

Well, today’s update is not so good. Started the car and all warning lights off. I figured, great, maybe it was having a bad day and it fixed itself. So I took it out and got 4 miles away from the house and it lit up like a Christmas tree. No AC, wouldn’t shift, no blinkers, etc. luckily, I was able to drive very slow and made it home.

NOT trying that again and will wait for Ferrari to come pick it up next week or so. I will update once they have it and start diagnosing it.

Both my SF90 and 296 have left me stranded and have spent significant time in for service, with a multitude of issues including those discussed here. My non-hybrid Ferrari’s haven’t had issues.

I was going to buy the 296 - looks great and performs well but I'm just not comfortable with current battery/hybrid tech. Plus I think at this level, as tech improves there should be an upgrade path for batteries etc. They won't do it because they just sell the next iteration for more money but that's not a game I want to play.
