I went on a 1200 mile road trip over some not great roads and really banged up my clear bra. I need to replace the front bumper areas. My installer says Ferrari's have a really fragile clear coat and believes that if he removes the clear bra it would cause damage to the paint and is reluctant to do so. I understand that an installer can mess up from time to time but I had not idea that removal of the clear bra could cause paint damage even if done right. Any one else have this problem?

I had clear bra removed from a Lamborghini Diablo and nothing happened to the paint.

I’d get a few more opinions. I’ve heard damage can happen but it’s rare.

You might want to check out the below. Shows how to remove old PPF without leaving glue residue but importantly, note how easy the PPF just tear off using the hot water method.

Good luck and let us know what worked for you.

How old is the PPF? Most of the products from the past few years are self healing so you may want to try some mild heat on the damaged areas. I have seen people use an ordinary hair dryer effectively or even just parking out in the summer sun. I witnessed a demo from an installer that had a piece on a steel plate he cut with a knife and heated it to heal the cut. Worth a shot to not need to remove the entire film.

Ha, this is timely. Im taking my 458 in on August 30th to have the old PPF removed and new applied. It has a bunch of pock marks and they'll probably have to touch a few up before applying the new stuff. It'll be the latest version of Xpel.

I had a 430 and had the old PPF removed with no damage at all. In fact I was supposed to drop it off and return the next day to pick it up but it removed so easily it only took an hour to remove it all from the windshield forward.

I just had some old PPF removed from a Speciale I purchased in February and then had a full PPF wrap performed. I had it done by Todd Cooperider at Esoteric Detailing in Ohio and he said they didn't have any problems. My understanding is that it's rare to have a problem on factory paint but is more likely if a car has been repainted.

That's funny. Todd told me it actually is not rare and no one in the industry will guarantee it not removing paint which is what the OP's installer is confirming. Definitely would not put PPF over new paint especially on bumpers where they stretch it very hard over the complex surfaces to get it to stick well.

    I have this done frequently.

Brand new cars can have the clear coat lifted.

It is always possible.... Especially on a Ferrari as their recent paint jobs have been pretty troublesome.

Esoteric is 100% right. If it's been repainted it will likely peel. If it is factory paint... It shouldn't.

    SHOULDN'T.

It is a low probability... But is always possible. It's not always the installers fault... Especially on Ferraris.

As mentored above, my 2012 TdF 458 is gettin new PPF this week. The detailing company let me know yesterday that they successfully removed the PPF on the areas I wanted new PPF - on the hood, bumper, a headlight and a drivers mirror without removing any paint. I was holding my breath...
New Xpel being applied as we speak.

I was also told by a high end installer - read high priced - in my area (not Todd) that removing PPF from plastic headlights is not recommended as, in their experience, it will lift the outer coating on the lens. It was explained that this coating is the final focus of the lens and you can tell that its been removed from the change in light pattern. Have no idea if this is true or maybe not applicable to Ferrari but in a conversation I had with another installer they confirmed that as well. My conclusion is PPF is a double edged sword.
