    Search Index: ( starter solenoid replacement 0 331 302 082 )

The ceramic cap on the end of my solenoid crumbled (see pic) when I removed the wires from my starter.

I'm not sure if it can be repaired. Does anyone know?

I found a replacement for it at a company called Wagner in Chino Hills.

Does anybody have any experience with this company?

The caption on their part number (bottom of Pg 3 in the url link to their PDF catalog) is: #W450-23.

    Description:

    Fits: FERRARI
Replaces: BOSCH 0-331-302-082 (which is the # on mine)
    Lester #: 16709
    OEM Unit #: 0-001-314-006
Note: 12 VOLT, SOLENOID CAP W460-03

Wondering why the OEM number is different than the "Replaces" number too.

Also, if they sell caps. And if this is an exact copy.. Maybe I can just get the cap.

But the description for the cap says:

    Replaces: BOSCH 1-330-516-001

Which doesn't fit any of the above referenced numbers.

I'm a little confused, so I wrote them an eMail. But if anyone can point me in a well beaten path, I'd rather not take any chances.

    Thanks a bunch!

The plastic becomes brittle with age and can break away like that. Especially when removing the wires from it. Or.........if there was a short in the solenoid. :)
Why was he removing the wires in the 1st place? DavidDriver?

Yeah he wanted to replace it and in removing the nut it came apart in his hands.I went through the same ordeal when I had my engine out during the rebuild and I gave the starter to a auto electrician to replace the cap.He said no prob about $150.The cond of my cap was no where as bad as Davids it was only a bit charred but it started ok and I only replaced it while I was there. He gave the starter back to me and the solenoid was stuffed. It wouldn't disengage. He was tryying to say that the ring gear must be damaged or something like that.I got him to replace the solenoid and then he wanted to charge me for it.I told him it was in perfectly good working order when I gave it to you and you quoted me $150 and thats what i paid.He wasn't to happy with me but he didn't get any more out of me.I then find out that he always goes back to fix his stuff ups all the time

    David,

That's not a totally unusual occurence in cars with a bit of mileage on them. The two threaded studs that protrude through the end cap carry a lot of amps( from the battery on one side, and on to the field coils in the starter on the other side) when the solenoid engages as you start the car, and subsequently there is heat build-up, and arcing on the inside while the starter is engaged.

BTW it's not ceramic, it's bakelite, and over many years gets scorched in the area around one of the studs.

It's a de-solder/re-solder job to the push on connector at the side, and you could do it yourself, but if you haven't got a solenoid end cap then any autoelectrical shop will have it, and it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

They bought ACE Electric whom made solenoids for lots of Bosch starters.
A local starter shop got a solenoid from them for my 512TR. Very inexpensive.

I got a complete replacement solenoid from Kragen for
$40 . . . as other chatters had suggested, VW bus was a direct replacement . . . had the identical problem you have!!!

I still need to track down why she occasionally just clicks.

Anyway, I can get you the p/n if you need.

Just want to 2nd the WAI recommendation, and mention that their website also shows that some of their solenoids are replacements for more than one particular Bosch PN. It's another data set that might help you (or confuse you more ;))

I'd also say that replacing just the cap yourself is the hard way that trades time and risk for not much $ (but I confess that I've grown even more lazy).

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Maurice is right. But he already knew why. I have no heat shield. Also a good reason to opt for the ceramic coating by Jet-Hot!

I got a response back from Wagner, and I'm pretty impressed with the help they were willing to offer. They also sell the little parts, like the cap that I'll need. And a new striker plate should I need that also.

They also told me how to perform the repair!

I asked and he graciously agreed to let me post (sans the prices) our correspondence for your review:

I have a Bosch 0 331 302 082 Starter solenoid that has a broken ceramic end. I see you have a replacement part: #W450-23. Can mine be reapired? Or do I need to purchase a new one? How much is it? How soon can you send it to me? I live in Studio City. Would it be easier for me to come pick one up? Thank you!

    Hello Mr. Driver,

    Thank you for your inquiry.

0-331-302-082 is replaced by our W450-23 which takes a W460-03 Solenoid Cap. You only need to unscrew the cap to replace it.

    Thank you Robert,

If you don't mind, I'd like to post your reply on FerrariChat.com, as I'm certain other owners of the various Ferrari 308 models, will find this information useful.

I'll call you with an order for the cap, once I see if mine actually unscrews. Someone told me they were soldered. But I can check it out, easily enough. Attached is a picture of mine.

    Let me know if okay.

    Thanks,

    David.

    Hello David,

Correct, you will have to unsolder your terminals at the top of the solenoid cap, then you break out the epoxy or glue that is covering the screws holding on the cap. After that, it will lift off for installation of the cap. One thing that you should also carefully look at is the mobile contact plate. It could be worn and might also need replacing. W480-07 is our striker plate, but this requires you to remove a c-clip to replace it. Sometimes you can get away with turning it over and using the other side. This is your call. Price for the striker plate is (deleted)

    Best regards,

    Bob

    For what it's worth...

the ...082 was superseded by 0 331 302 070 which is a good part number and available according to Bosch.

www.rockauto.com came up using google, and lists it for $77.

Does anyone know if the solenoid part number discussed in this thread would be the same for a 1981 Mondial 8? Thanks!
