My '90 348 has some of the worst window tinting and needs to be removed. I know it is easy enough to do though what is a good glass solvent to remove gunk to keep the windows from binding up ?

As another week goes by I seem to be putting the car back to stock and nearly found/fixed all the minor issues. Had to flush the washer tank/system which was caked. Console threw an E6 and I need to check or replace the power module. Bought a k&n filter and tuned idle a bit lower.

If you have access to a steamer that steams to work best. Other wise cut a black plastic garbage bag in the shape of the window, let it sit in the sun for a few hours to help get the glue soft, then just rip off the tint film. Clean the glue off with soapy water and brand news razors.

easiest way....get ammonia in a spray bottle. spray the inside of the window. place the garbage bag like ernie says over the shape of the glass. the ammonia will allow the garbage bag to stick. let it sit for only about 20 minutes. the tint will peel right off.

and not windex...im talking ammonia like you'd buy at a hardware store. obviously, do this outside with proper ventilation. that's how commercial guys remove it.

Great idea using the steamer. I have a shark steamer around the house somewhere will give it a shot.

use a steamer to heat the window from outside and get things nice and warm.
peel slowly, you should have little residue left
clean with windex. done. enjoy your new look.

edit: and didn't see it was already suggested. regardless, its the most pain free method, no fussing with garbage bags etc.

When you use the steamer get a corner of the film pealed up, then steam on the glue underside of the film. It softens the glue and gets it wet. Remember to "peal" it SLOWLY. Keep a steady pressure on the film and let the steam do the work. The film will peal of on it's own as the glue softens from the steam and the constant pressure. You don't want to try and peal it off like take off tape, just let the steam and pressure do the work. Takes a while, and is slow, but just about all the glue will come of on the film this way.

A friend of mine had a tint shop and that is what he did when he had cars that needed new tint. Had a few of them sitting in the sun while he worked on another. Usually works best on rear windows that are slanted. The main reason for the steamer is because of rear defroster lines that are not imbedded in the glass. You cannot take a razor to the glass because you would scrape off the lines = no more rear defroster & paying for the customers new rear window. ;) The side windows would get the tint ripped off sprayed with soapy water and cleaned with new razors.

At least the 348's curved rear window was not tinted. Only the side windows and quarters. It was a FL car though tinted windows usually means tickets in nj. Yeah, nj, the state where you cannot tint windows or pump your own gas. o_O

Yesterday I started removing the ugly window tint. It took about 20 minutes to clean up three of the windows with a razor scraper. The third window I heated with the steamer did not go well at all. When peeling the film it pretty much has 3 layers, tint, clear tint and crappy glue like substance.

The razor chunked all of it off easy. When heating all three came off separate and the glue like substance smeared and seemed impossible. After 40 minutes working the passenger quarter panel the new look is really great.

You can also use goo gone on the window after you peel off the tint. Spray/wipe on, let sit for a few minutes and scrape with a razor.
