In case you didn't follow F1 in 1995, Mika Hakkinen wrecked badly in Adelaide. I remember at the time watching the slow-motion replay and being stunned by how violently his head was thrashed around. It was interesting to read Dr. Sid Watkin's account of that accident--Hakkinen's trachea was torn and he saved Mika's life by performing a tracheotomy on the spot--in the car, I believe. Shortly after came the push to change the safety rules that required higher cockpit sides.

I remember reading that if Mr Watkins was 10 seconds later it would have been lights out for Hakkinen.

That was a very scary one. Makes sense for them to implement the use of HANS.

Yes ... I remember that one ... not live, but from replays later. He was a VERY
LUCKY MAN that day. Scary to watch again...

This began a stretch where several drivers were killed--Scott Brayton, Jeff Krosnoff, Greg Moore & Gonzalo Rodriguez in CART, plus a few NASCAR drivers that included the Petty grandson and culminated with Dale Earnhardt. The mid-to-late 90's sadly made us all too familiar with the term Basal Skull Fracture. Mika Hakkinen was indeed very lucky that day!
